Description
J. SIMONS HEALTH MATTRESS June 3, 1941 Filed July 16, 1940 In venor A orney,
Patented J une H3, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HEALTH MATTRESS John Simons, Eugene, Oreg. Application July 16, 1940, Serial No. 345,809
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a health mattress, the general object of the invention being to provide an opening in one end of the mattress Whereby the face of the occupant of the mattress can be placed therein so that he can breathe While lying on his stomach. This will provide better drainage from the eyes and nose and by lying on the stomach there is less tendency for the development of adipose tissue in the abdomen.
Another object of the invention is to provide a block formed of the same material as the mattress for filling the opening when it is not desired to use the opening.
This invention also `consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the ac companying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is -a top plan View of a full width mattress constructed in accordance with this invention and having a pair of openings at one end thereof for use by both occupants of the mattress, this View showing the openings lled by the blocks.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view showing the Figure 4 is a perspective View of one of the v blocks used for closing an opening.
Figure 5 is La fragmentary View showing the openings with their ends spaced from the end of the mattress.
Figure 6 is a section on the line E--B of Figure 5.
As shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, the mattress M has a pair of rectangular openings I formed in one end thereof with th-e openings passing through the end edge and the side walls yof these openings are bowed outwardly as shown at I'. Each opening is adapted to be closed, when desired, by a block-like member 2 which is lformed of the same material as that of the mattress and this block is formed with shallow grooves 3 in its side edges for receiving the parts I', the blocks being slid into .each opening from the outer end of the opening and removed from the opening by moving the block outwardly to the end of the mattress. The outer end of the block is formed with the beads 4 to conform to the beads of the mattress at the edges thereof.
Instead of having the opening pass through the end edge of the mattress I may make the opening terminate short of the end edge as shown at 5, see Figure 5. Each of these openings 5 is closed by a block 6 and the side walls of each opening 5 slightly curve downwardly and inwardly and the side walls of the .block 6 curve downwardly and inwardly so that the parts are substantially wedge shape to hold the block in place as shown in Figure 6. While the drawing shows a full-size mattress intended for use by two `persons with a .pair of openings in the mattress, one -for each person, it will be understood that when a single `mattress is used but one opening will be made at its longitudinal center.
When a `person wishes to lie on his stomach and keep his face downward he removes the block and then places his face in the opening. As before stated, this will ,permit the person to breathe properly and also it will permit full ydrainage from the nose vand eyes and in both forms of the invention the formation of the side walls of the opening will support the face of the occupant as will be clear from Figures 3 and 6.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the lconstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A mattress having a breathing opening in its head portion passing through both faces of the mattress, said opening being of elongated form and extending longitudinally of the mattress and passing through the upper end of the mattress, said opening being of a width and length to receive the face and upper portion of the head of the occupant of the mattress, the side walls of the invention, what is opening -bowed outwardly, whereby the upper.
portion of said side walls form seats for the sides of the face and upper portion of the head, a block formed of the same material as that of the mattress vfor closing the opening when the block is slid into said opening, the side edges of the block being grooved to receive the outwardly bowed side walls of the opening and beads formed on the upper and lower faces of the block at the :outer end thereof to form continuations of the beads of the mattress when the block is in position closing the opening.
2. A mattress having a lbreathing opening in its head portion passing through lboth faces of the mattress, said opening being of elongated form and extending longitudinally of the mattress and passing through the upper end of the mattress, said opening -being of a width and length to receive the face and upper portion of the head of the occupant of the mattress, the l0 side walls of the opening bowed outwardly, whereby the upper portion of said side walls form seats for the sides of the face and upper portion of the head, and a -block formed of the same material as that of the mattress for closing the opening when the block is slid into said opening, the side edges of the block being grooved to receive the outwardly bowed side walls of the opening.
JOHN SIMONS.
