Description

T. W. GRAYDON. Audiphone.
No. 224,177. Patented Feb. 3, 1880.
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. GRAYDON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
AUDIPHONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,177, dated February 3, 1880.
Appl'cation led December 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. GRAYDON, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new a-nd useful Improvement in Audiphones, ot' which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
My invention relates to that class of sound-transmittinginstruments termed audiphones,77 designed to transmit sound-vibrations to the auditory nerve through the teeth; and it consists in the combination, with the diaphragm and supporting parts of such apparatus, of an adjustable spring arranged to press upon the diaphragm and thereby regulate its tension.
It also consists in the construction and arrangementot' thc appara-tus, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings as illustrating one form otA my invention, A represents a circular diaphragm, ot' metal, hard rubber, or other vibrating materia-l, secured within three or more hook-shaped supports, b, projecting from a ri'ng or frame, B, which is furnished with a handle, C.
Attached to the under side of the handle C is a curved'metallic strip or spring, D, terminated by two or more lingers, c, which rest upon and are attached to a small flat ring, f, of rubber, metal, or any suitable material, which in turn rests against the diaphragm. A thumb-screw, G, passing through the inner end of the handle and in contact with the spring D, regulates its tension and causes the ring j' to press with more or less force against the diaphragm A, as may be desired.
The diaphragm A is pierced by one or more holes, h, for the attachment of a transmitting cord or cords, c, at the end of which is secured a mouthpiece to be held between the teeth of the user.
It is found by experiment that with some persons a greater, and with some a less, degree of tension ofthe diaphragm is necessary in order to secure the best results, and the user will therefore regulate the pressure upon the diaphragm by means ofthe thumb-screw, as occasion may require.
In carrying out my invention I do not contine myself to any particular mode of 1nounting the diaphragm or to any particular form of apparatus; but
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with the diaphragm of an audiphone apparatus, an adjustable spring arranged to rest upon it and regulate its tension, substantially as specified.
2. The auditory apparatus consisting of the diaphragm A, mounted upon the frame B and provided with the adjustable spring D, ar ranged to press upon said diaphragm, substantiall y as and for the purpose specied.
3. The auditory apparatus consist-in g of the circular frame B, supports b, diaphragm A, spring D, ring j', and thumb-screw G, con structed and arranged as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of December, 187 9.
THOMAS W. GRAYDON.
