Application October 26, 1940, SerialNO. 362,977
6 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in' a combination lavatory and drinking fountain fixture, and the objects of my invention are, first, to providea combination lavatory and drinking fountain fixture having a discharge spout and a drinking nozzle forming a unitary part'thereof, and, second, to provide relief means discharging through the overflow passageway for preventing squirting in case the discharge openings ,are blocked.
With the foregoing and related objects in view the improvement resides in the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side sectional view of a combination lavatory and drinking fountain fixture taken along the lines l--| of Figure 3; Figure 2', a sectional view of the discharge passageways, taken along the line 2--2 of Figure 1; Figure 3, a front elevation of the combination lavatory and drinking fountain fixture, certain parts being broken away; and Figure 4, a sectional view of a modified form of the discharge passageways.
The fixture consists of a rear or back portion l and a forwardly and upwardly extending portion 2, forming a bowl 3. The back I is, at the portions shown by the dotted lines in Figure 3, formed with a double wall, thus forming an overflow passageway or conduit 4 and a relief passageway 5 in communication therewith, the latter for a purpose hereinafter described. The back I .i
is provided with an overflow aperture 6 providing communication with the interior of the overflow passageway 4, and the forwardly extending portion 2 is provided with a double wall portion forming a drain passageway I communicating with the overflow passageway 4 and provided with a spud 8 for connection to a drain pipe. The bowl 3 is provided with apertures 9 communicating with the drain passageway 1. The apertures 9 are of a diameter such as to provide a slow discharge from the bowl, thus dispensing with the customary drain plug or valve, since the bowl can be filled and used for washing, etc., while the draining is taking place.
It will be understood that fixtures of this type are most frequently utilized in prisons, asylums and similar institutions where reasons of administration, as well as of economy, demand that detachable parts be eliminated and the whole structure be strictly tamper-proof.
The back I is apertured at Ill, and a spud H, adapted for connection to a supply pipe, is inserted therein. The flow of fluid through the spud I I may be regulated by a flush valve or suitable valves (not shown) which may be mounted in the apertures l2 and [3 in the back I.
The back I is also provided with a discharge spout l4 formed integrally with the back I, and formed with a chamber l5 in communication with the aperture It. A discharge spout IS, in communication with the chamber I5, is directed downwardly to discharge into the bowl 3. A drinking nozzle [1, in communication with the spout I6, is directed to discharge upwardly.
It will be noted that the nozzle I1 is of a diameter considerably smaller than of the spout I6, and that the nozzle I! is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the direction of flow through the spout l6; hence, when the spout I6 is unobstructed the fiow is entirely'from the chamber [5 through the spout, thus providing water to fill the bowl 3 for washingzetc. If it is desired to use the fixture as a drinking fountain the spout I6 is obstructed, as by use of a finger, and the water then passes through chamber 15, partially through spout l6, and is discharged through the drinking nozzle I1. 4 i
In order to prevent sufficient pressure from being built up to project the discharge from the drinking nozzle I! being projected outside of the bowl 3, the spout I6 is provided with a relief port l8, indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1, providing communication between the spout l6 and a chamber l9 which is in communication, through the port 2!], with the relief passageway 5; Thus, when the spout I6 is closed off a portion of the flow is by-passed through relief port [8, chamber [9, port 20 and relief passageway 5 and out overflow passageway 4, thus preventing sufficient pressure from being built up to project the stream from the drinking nozzle ll outside the bowl 3.
Even though both the spout l6 and drinking nozzle are closed, it is impossible to squirt water outside the bowl, since the relief port l8 prevents the building up of sufficient water pressure to cause squirting.
The fixture is preferably provided with two of the relief ports l8, as illustrated in Figure 2, since by the use of multiple relief ports each port may be of such small diameter that there is no appreciable flow therethrough when the flow through the spout I6 is unrestricted. However, if desired, a single port may be provided.
In the modification illustrated in Figure 4, the spud II is provided with a metal pipe 2| extending into the spout [6, in spaced relationship from the walls thereof and terminating at a point spaced from the discharge end of the spout, as
illustrated. To prevent squirting should some object, such as a pencil, be inserted in the spout I6 to block the end of the pipe 21, the latter is preferably provided with relief apertures 22 in the walls thereof which, in that event, will permit the discharge of fluid and prevent sufficient pressure to cause squirting being built up.
The specific structure disclosed is for the purpose of illustration only, and it will be apparent that numerous changes in the details thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; therefore, the invention is not limited to said details but comprehends all constructions within the scope of the appended claims.
- I claim: 1. In a combination lavatory and drinking fountain, the combination of a back, a bowl formed integral therewith, a drain passageway attached to said bowl and in communicationwith the interior thereof, an overfiow aperture in said back, an overflow passageway attached tosaid back and in communication with said overflow aperture, a dischargespout formed integrally with said back and in communication with a source of water supply, said discharge spout comprising a spout adapted to discharge into said bowl, a drinking nozzle in communication with said spout and positioned at an acute angle with respect to the direction of flow through said spout, oneor more relief ports in communication with said spout, anda relief passageway providing communication between said relief port and said overflow passageway.
2. In a combination lavatory and drinking fountain, thecombination of a back, a bowl formed integrally therewith, a drain passageway attached to said bowl and in communication with the interior thereoflan overflow aperture in said back, an overflow passageway attached to said back and in communication with said overflow aperture, a discharge spout formed integrally with said back and in communication with a source of water supply, said discharge spout comprising a spout adapted to discharge into said bowl, a drinking nozzle in communication with said spout, one or more relief ports in communication with said spout, and a relief passageway providing communication between said relief port-and said overflow passageway.
' drain passageway.

In a combination lavatory and drinking fountain, the combination of a back, a bowl formed integrally therewith, a drain passageway in communication with the interior of said bowl, and adischarge spout attached to said back and in communication with a source of water supply, said discharge spout comprising a spout adapted to discharge into said bowl, a drinking nozzle in communication with saidspout, and one or more relief ports in communication with said spout and said drain passageway.
5. In a combination lavatory and drinking fountain, the combination of a back, a bowl formed integrally therewith, a drain passageway attached to said bowl and in communication with the interior thereof, a discharge spout, a spud adapted for connection to a source of water supply and having an extended pipe portion extend-' ing into said spout and being spaced from the walls and discharge opening thereof, a drinking nozzle in communication with said spout, and one or more relief ports in communication with said spout and said drain passageway.
6. In a combination lavatory and dr nking fountain, the combination of a back, a bowl formed integrally therewith, a drain passageway attached to said bowl and in communication with the interior thereof, a discharge spout, a spud adapted for connection to a source of water supply and having an extended pipe portion extending into said spout and being spaced'from the walls and discharge opening thereof, one or more relief apertures in the walls of said pipe, a drinking nozzle in communication with said'spout, and one or more relief ports in communication with aid spout and said drain passageway.
