Description

I L. HORNUNG.
Vegeta,b1e and Meat Slicer.
No. 224,016. JPiatented Feb. 3', 1880.
N. PETERS, PHDTOUTNOGHAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES LEWIS HORNUNG, OF BROOKVILLE, INDIANA.
VEGETABLEFAND MEAT SLlCER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,016, dated February 3, 1880.
i Application filed November 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS HORNUNG, of Brookville, in the county of Franklin and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable and Meat Slicers, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forth a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an .improved device for slicing vegetables, meat, &c.; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arran gement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a plan View. Fig. 2 is a section on line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 is an end view.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the sash, provided with the grooves a. B represents the bed, which is composed of two pieces, attached to the sash, and each extending about one-third the length of the sash from its either end, leaving an opening, 1), in the center of the bed. 0 represents ordinary clamps at the side of the device, for securing it to a table, 850., said clamps having their arms extended entirely across the bottom of the device, thereby forming a brace and holding the parts A and B firmly in position. 1) represents a standard extending downward from the under side of the sash, to which is attached a brace, f, extending from the base of said standard to the opposite side of the device, and secured to the under side of the sash. E represents a lever pivoted to the standard D and extending upward above the top of the device. To this lever E, near its center, is pivoted the connecting-rod F, which extends along the side of the'sash and is pivoted to a bolt, 0, which extends through a slot, e, in the sash and is secured to the slide Gr.
Between the inner side of the connectingrod F and outer side of the sash is placed a turns thereon, the object of which is to reduce the friction occasioned by the contact of the lever mechanism to the outer side of the sash.
Grepresents the slide, working in the grooves a in the inner side of the sash. Said slide is provided at its center with a diagonal opening, h, in which are countersunk the knives H. Upon either end of the slide are secured friction-rollers g g, which serve to reduce the friction between the slide and the groove in the sash.
1 represents the hopper, having the projections '0' at the sides, which fit into corresponding depressions a in the top of the/sash to prevent the hopper from sliding out of position.
The hopper is secured to the sash by means of hooks 1 upon the hopper and staples m upon the sash. The hopper is provided with a cover, K, provided with a suitable handle, it, adapted to fit into the hopper and exclude dust, dirt, &c. t
L represents a box, attached to the under side of the machine by means of hook 0 and staple 12, said box being placed directly beneath the opening I; in thebed B, to receive the sliced material from the knives. Said box is provided at its bottom with a slide, Z, whereby the material' may be easily removed. The upper edges of this box are provided with projections r, which fit into openings 8 in the under side of the sash, to prevent the box from sliding out of position.
At each of the corners of the hopper and extending across the same are rods 1?, which serve to strengthen the same and act as stops to prevent the cover from hearing down upon the knives when the hopper is empty.
The operation of the device is as follows: The device is secured to a table or board by means of the clamps on the side of the machine; the substance to be cut is placed in the hopper, and by drawing the lever back and forth the knives are passed under the substance, shaving it off into thin slices, which fall into the box L, and can be removed at pleasure. By this means a simple, cheap, and easily-operated device is produced, and one that is not liable to get out of repair.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and desire to secure by In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Letters Patent, ismy own I have hereto affixed my signature in 10 In a vegetable and. meat slicer, the sash A, presenoeof two Witnesses. with grooves a, slot e, and base B in combi- 5 hation with the slides Gr, having knives H LEWIS HORNUNG' and friction-rollers g, washer d, removable hop- Witnesses per I, and. box L,- substantially as and for the WILLIAM P. STAILCUP, purpose setforth. CHRISTIAN KOEBER.
