To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raeford, in the county of Cumberland and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vegetable- Slicers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vegetable slicers and more particularly to the type provided with a knife or cutting blade.
One object of the invention is the provision of a vegetable slicer having a base plate supported above the table or other place upon which the cutter is placed so that a plate or receptacle may be placed between the table and baseplate, the said base plate having an arcuate-shaped opening, the me dial portion of which is in alinement with the edge of the cutting blade, so that the removed slices will fall into the plate or receptacle whereby the necessity of toofrequently handling the slices will be eliminated.
Another object is the provision of a spring buffer for the cutting blade.
ith these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification :F igure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional end view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The support for the base plate comprises a pair of cleats designated by the numerals 5 and 6. These members are preferably of wood and are oblong in cross section so that when placed upon their sides the space between their upper faces and the top of the table or other support, will be somewhat greater than the depth of an ordinary plate. The cleats are arranged in spaced relation and support a base plate 7, the said base plate being oblong in contour and having its opposite ends fixedly secured to the upper sides of the cleats. Formed in one of the longitudinal sides of the base plate is an arcuate-shaped recess 8, the said recess being positioned between the supporting cleats and its medial portion extending to a point adjacent to the medial line of the base plate.
That will subsequently be termed a guide is shown to include a pair of arcuate-shaped straps designated by the numerals 9 and 10. These members are arranged in vertical parallel planes and are spaced the middle of the space' therebetween being in vertical alinement with the medial portion of the arcuate-shaped recess 8. The opposite ends of the straps terminate in outwardly extending feet 11, which are provided with openings for the reception of screws 12 or the like by means of which the feet are secured to the upper face of the base plate and adjacent to the opposite ends of the arcuateshaped recess 8.
The cutting blade is designated by the numeral 13 and is positioned between the guide straps 9 and 10 and adjacent to one corner is provided with an opening for the reception of a pivot pin 14 passing through alining openings in the guide straps 9 and 10, the said pivot being so positioned that when the blade is lowered its cutting edge will bear throughout its length on the upper face of the base plate 7. A stop 10 extends through the straps 9 and 10 above the pivot pin 14, to limit the upward movement of the blade. By virtue of the disposition of the guide straps 9 and 10, and the position of the cutting blade it will be manifest that the cutting edge thereof will be in a vertical plane with the medial portion of the arcuateshaped recess 8. That end of the cutting blade remote from the pivot pin 14 is provided with a handle 15, which extends radially from the guide straps 9 and 10.
Positioned on the upper face of the base plate and the handle 15 is a block 16, and secured to the upper end of the block 16 is a spring buffer 17, the said spring buffer lying in the path of movement of thehandle and provided at its upper terminal with a horizontally disposed disk 18, so that when the handle descends to a certain point and abuts against the disk the spring will be compressed as the blade passes through the vegetable being sliced. By provision of the spring buffer it will be manifest when the blade is raised during the act of positioning a vegetable beneath the cutting edge thereof directly beneath the inner end of" and accidentally released it will be prevented from descending to the base plate, whereby the danger to the fingers of the operator will be eliminated.
The arcuate guide straps 10 serve to prevent lateral movement of the blade 13 and serve as stops for limiting inward movement of the spring, so that said spring will not be turned from its normal position by reciprocation of the knife blade.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
1 claim t- A vegetable slicer comprising a base having a semi-circular opening and adapted to be supported over the edge of a pan or receiving dish, a pair of arcuate guide mem bers having terminal portions secured to said base and extending vertically thereabove, a knife pivoted at one end between the guide members and adapted to be reciprocated against the base for slicing vegetables and provided with a handle extending outwardly of the guide members, a rivet connecting the guide members and located above the knife and adapted to the movement of said knife, a spring disposed on said base and bearing against the-knife adapted to hold said knife normally above the base and bearing against the adjacent portions of the guide members, whereby said spring is prevented from moving inwardly, said spring serving to cushion the blows on the knife, and means secured to the base for holding the spring in place.
