Description

(No Model.) v J. M. SUMMERS.
VEGETABLE SLIGER. 7 No. 548,145. Patented 001;. 15,- 1895.
' UNITED STATES PATENT owes.
JAMES M. SUMMERS, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
VEG ETABLE-SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,145, dated October 15, 1895.
Application filed November 21, 1894. Serial No. 529,513. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. SUMMERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Slicers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of cover. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through cutter and slot in table. Fig. 4. is a cross-section through cutter and adj usting-screws. x
The object of this invention is to provide a vegetable-cutter possessing certain new and useful improvements in the arrangement and construction of the cutter, whereby its action is rendered more efiectual and its adjustment facilitated; also, to provide the reciprocating carriage which carries the vegetables with certain improved features, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
Other minor features of improvement will appear in the following description.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the bed or table of the machine, which is provided with lateral rails a, having their inner faces formed with guidegrooves b for the carriage B. Said grooves usually extend the entire length of the bed or table in order that said carriage may be placed therein or taken therefrom at either end. At each end the bed or table is provided with guards C, which preferably consist each of a strap of metal pivoted at one end to the end of the rails a, its opposite end portion having a hook c, which engages a stud (1. By disengaging the hook the strap at either end may be swung upwardly to permit the removal or insertion of the carriage. At about the central portion the bed or table is provided with an oblique transversely-extendin g slot E, over which is set the cutter F. Said cutter comprises a steel plate, which is beveled at each edge on its under face to form double cutting-edges. This plate is of slightly less width than the slot E, in order to leave openings through which the cut vegetable falls, the walls of the slot being beveled downward and outward from the upper edge of the slot in all directions. The cutter is secured to the bed at its ends by means of central screws g and by adj usting-screws. The heads of these adj usting-screws extend loosely through perforations h in the plate, which are countersunk on the under side thereof. It will be observed, therefore, that by the manipulation of these screws the screws g being somewhat loosened the said plate may be adjusted so that its cutting-edges shall stand at different heights above the surface of the table, according to the thickness of the out which it is desired to make.
The carriage B comprises a box, the lateral portions of which are each formed on the outer face, near the bottom, with a longitudinal groove K, which embraces the portion of the rail a above the groove a. In this manner said carriage is guided in its reciprocation and is held from vertical movement.
L is a cover, which is made sufficiently small to fit inside the box and which forms a follower, whereby the vegetables are forced into contact with the cutter. Said cover is provided with a handle L and at each corner with a laterally-projecting stud or pin Z. These studs play in vertical grooves l in the lateral walls of the box, the bottoms of these grooves forming stops for the studs or pins to hold the cover sufficiently above the table to prevent its coming in contact with the bottom of the box. To prevent these studs or pins from wearing away the Wood, the bottoms of the grooves are covered with metal, as indicated at m.
The bed or table may be placedover any suitable receptacle during operation; but I prefer to provide a drawer M, which has edge flanges 4%, arranged to slide in guides 'n, se-
cured to the under side of said bed or table. The latter is usually provided with supportin glegs P.
It will be observed that the cutter acts during both movements of the carriage.
Having thus described my iuventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vegetable cutter, the combination with the bed or table having the slot therein, of the double edged blade, the screws g which secured said cutter blade, and the adjusting screws 9' having their heads engaging counter-sunk apertures in the said cutter blade, substantially as specified.
2. In a vegetable slicer, the combination of JAMES M. SUMMERS. Witnesses:
