Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM BALDWIN, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,553, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM BALDWIN,ofNashua, in the county of Hillsborough and in the State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Vegetable Slicers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a central vertical longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same.
This invention has relation to vegetable-slicing machines, and consists in the construction and arrangement of the sliding vegetable-holder, whereby the same may be raised and lowered so as not to clog or, endanger the cutting of the fingers. It also consists in the construction and arrangement of the knife-frame so as to regulate or adjust the cutter to slice finely or coarsely, as hereinafter described.
' In the drawing, A represents the knife-frame with raised parallel sides B and handle 0. D designates the knife placed obliquely in the frame A. E is a board constituting part of the frame A. It is lengthened out to form the handle 0, and has a transverse groove, 6, cut across its un der side. Through this groove passes a rod, F, which extends through the sides B, and has a thumb-screw, Gr, turned on one end. The board E is pivoted to the sides B at N, and hence may be raised or lowered to regulate the cutting of the knife D. It is tightened in place by means of the rod F and thumb-screw G. H represents the slide, designed to move lengthwise over the knife D, between the sides B. It is pivoted near its forward end to the sides, which are formed with longitudinal grooves I), through which the pivots or pins b move. On the under side of this slide a recess, I, is cut for the purpose of holding vegetables to be out. A handle, J, serves as a means of holding and moving said slide, which may be raised and lowered on its pivots at any point, and thus adapted to the unequal quantities of vegetables under it. K represents a button at the end of the frame A, designed to keep the slide from being projected too far forward. The slide may be taken out by turning said button around.
I claim as my invention.-
1. The pivoted slide H, in combination with the knife frame A having grooved sides B, substantially as described.
2. The vegetable-cutter having the frame A, grooved sides B, knife D, pivoted slide H, pivoted board or handle E, rod F, and screw G, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto-subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM BALDWIN.
. HENRY B. ATHERTON. (34.)
