Description
. UNITED STATES "PATENT Darren.
HENRY W. BALTZ, SE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN C. GLIME, OF SAME PLACE.
TURBINE WATER-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,979, dated February 3, 1880.
Application filed October 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. BALTZ, Sr., of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbine WVater-l/Vheels; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make to and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g, which forms part of this specification, in whicl Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section.
My invention has reference to an improvement on Letters Patent of the United States N 0. 214,813, granted to John O. (Jlime, for turbine water-wheels; and it has for its object the provision of means for obtaining an additional amount of power from the same or required head or flow of water necessary for running wheels constructed according to said patent.
My invention accordingly consists in the provision of a turbine water-wheel placed upon a shaft inclosing a concentric gate provided with chutes, in combination with another or a second turbine wheel secured upon said shaft a short distance below that of the first-named wheel and an intervening fixed chuterin g,
whereby the unspent power contained in the water, as the same issues from the first wheel, will be utilized to give additional power to the wheel-shaft by passing said water to and through the second wheel.
3 5 Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the wheel-case, provided with a lid or cover, a, step-bearing B for the step b of the shaft B, and a fixed annular chute-ring, E, which is secured in position on a shoulder, a
v 4 formed on said case, and is firmly held thereon by means of the screws a a, or by other suitable means.
a is a water conduit or pipe conducting the water through the opening a in the center of the lid or cover a to the chamber 1), in
which is the annular movable gate D, having chutes d formed therein. Surrounding said gate, audsecuredto the shaft B, is a tur hine water-wheel, O. Said conduit, chamber,
gate, and wheel are such as are described in the patent already referred to, and therefore need no further particular description, only stating that the buckets of said wheel 0 receive the impact of the water vertically. F is another or a second turbine wheel, firmly secured to shaft B below the chute-rin g E, and
is formed with buckets ff, so arranged and shaped as to receive the impact of the water horizontally.
The operation is as follows: The shaft d being turned, the pinion d thereon engaging with a rack on the gate D, as shown, the latter is adjusted to allow the required amount of water to pass through its contained chutes cl (Z to the buckets of the wheel 0 to revolve the same. As the water flows off of said wheel 0 it falls into the chamber Eupon and passes through the chutes c e of the chutering E, striking the buckets ff of the wheel F, thereby imparting force to said wheel F to obtain an additional power from the shaft B, which addition in power will be nearly equal to the amount of unspent power contained in the water falling fromthe wheel 0. This unspent power is very considerable, and means which provide for its utilization add greatly to the capacity of the turbine wheels.
I have demonstrated by actual test that a wheel six inches in diameter, whenplaced upon the shaft B in the position shown by the wheel G, will, with a given flow of water, raise a weight oftwenty-one pounds attached to a rope passing over a ten-and-one-fourth-inch pulley. WVith two wheels, as O and F, placed upon the same shaft B, the wheel 0 being six and the 5 wheel F nine inches in diameter, and with the same head or flow of water, they together will raise a weight of thirty-four pounds-a gain of thirteen pounds, or an increase of power equal to over fifty per cent. of that obtained by using only one turbine wheel.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The case A, gate D, shaft B, in combination with turbine wheels G and F and intervening chute-ring, E, substantially as shown and described.
2. The wheel-case A, having central opening,
a, and annular chute-ring E, in combination with gate D and wheel 0, whereby said case In testimony that I claim the foregoing I is formed with two Water-chambers, D and E, have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of 10 substantially as shown and described. October, 1879.
3. The combination of shaft B turbine wheelsO and F, intervening ohute-ring,E,and HENRY BALTZ case A, the latter being formed with a shoul- Witnesses:
der or ofiset a for the reception of said chute- J. R. MASSEY,
ring E, substantially as shown and described. AUGUST Q. NEUBER.
