THEODORE n. TIMBY. oF sARAToe'A, New YORK.
Letters Patent No. 91,580, dated .Tune 22, 1869.
Torall whom it may concern Be itknown that I, Tnnononn R. TIMBY, of the town and county of Saratoga, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbine Water-Wheels; and I declare that the following is a sufiiciently full and exact description thereof', to enable one skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to carry it into effect, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification.
The subject of my invention is a duplex central-discharge wheel, the impact faces of whose buckets are of angular form, and are provided with concentric flanges, which prevent centrifugal or tangential slip or pressure of the water, and, in connection with the surrounding eccentric Hume, hold the water to its place, so that its pressure upon the buckets will be constant and unbroken.
- In the drawings- Figure 1 represents a horizontal section of my improved wheel` in the plane indicated by the line :t x, 1i 2.
gFignre 2 represents a vertical section at y y, fig. l.
A is the stationary casing, in which is the converging scroll or flume B, through which the water enters,
l and is delivered to the buckets.
The shaft C is supported below by astep, D, and above has its bearing in a yoke or frame, E, in customary manner.
The wheel proper consists of a central 'horizontal plate, F,rfirmly"secured to the shaft G,and buckets Gr H I, mounted upon the periphery 'of the said plate,
which is formed to iit them, as represented in fig. 1, Y
and connecting rims M N.
The impact faces G of' the buckets form planes radial, or nearly so, to the wheel, so as to present surfaces at right 'angles to the line on which the water strikes them, and are flanked by lips orilanges H, arranged concentrically to the wheel, and sei-vins.r to pre- `sent any tangential slip of the waterfrom the faces G, or
any radial pressure upon the columnwithiu the ume.
The concentricity of these flanges, andof the outer surfaces J ot the forward ends otf the buckets, causes them I to offer no obstruction tothe rotation of the wheel, and also adapts them to form, in connection with the eccentric iiume or casing, a converging or wedge-shaped space, the eiect of which is to hold the water to its place, so that it will exert a constant and unbroken pressure upon the buckets.`
The inner walls-v I of the buckets are made of parabolic or other curved form, to permit the free inward How of the water after its force has beenexerte'd upon the impact faces of the buckets. Y
The water is then discharged freely above and below,
through the central apertures K L.
The red 'arrow' in iig. 1V indicates the direction of rotation' ofthe wheel.
The blue arrows show the course of the water, and the dotted lines vparallel with the inner face of the liume indicate the portion of the water that acts upon each bucket.
The buckets are connected -at their upper and lower edges by the-rims M and N of thewheel.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' i 1. The buckets, constructed with radial, or`near1y radial, impact faces G, concentric or tangential lips H to prevent slip, and curved inner wallsI, to permit the free passage ofthe spent water inward toits discharge,
subsmntially as set forth.
2, The segmental cheeks H J, ,in combination with the eccentric fiume or casing, Ias explained.`
3. The central plate, in connection with the buckets G H I and discharge-apertures K' L, arranged as shown.
