Description

J. B. PARK, OF OMAHA, NEBRAS-KA.
Leners Patent No. seperated March 1o, 1869.
IMPRCVEMENT IN WATER-WHEELS.
The Schedule refen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part. of the Samb.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, J. B. PARK, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas, and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water- Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference Abeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a plan of my improved wheel, with the top removed.. A
Figure 2 represents a section on the lineax of g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The nature of myinvention relates to improvements in waterrwheels, whereby it.is designed to provide a more effective and useful wheel, without additional cost, than those now in use.
It consists in providing scroll-wheels, such as are actuated by the direct action of the water, with hinged buckets, and arranging them in an eccentric scroll, so that when the buckets arrive at the throat, where the water is received, they will swing open and receive the full force of the water, retaining that position until they have arrived at or somewhat beyond the passage for the escape of the water from the scroll, when the gradually-receding scroll causes them to close in to' ward the body of the wheel to a point a short distance from the throat, when they are entirely closed, and the scroll is drawn in so as to form a close joint with the..
body of the wheel, which entirely prevents the passage of any water around into the throat again, as will beV more fully described on reference to the accompanying drawings. Y
A represents the core, or body-portion of the wheel, which is provided with cycloidal recesses in the periphery ofthe top and bottom plates, or,` rims, having the radial shoulders a.
B represents the buckets, which are pivoted to the wheel at l1, so as to swing in either direction between the curved portion C of the periphery, or the radial shoulders a.
D represents an eccentric scroll, provided with a top, F, bottom, G, and throat, E, through which latter the Water enters.
H represents the opening through the bottom, for
the discharge of the water after it has done its work,
Patentand-I, the gate, for admitting or shutting off the passage ofthe water through the throat E to the wheel.
K represents the shaft, or axis of the wheel.
The buckets being closed by the action ofthe scroll, when they arrive at the point d, of the junction of the scroll with the side wall of the throat, the water entering the cell between the inner face of the bucket and the periphery ofthe core of the wheel, will cause i-t to ily open, as shown at c, and receive the full pressure of the water in a manner best calculated to develop the greatest amount of power by the direct action of the same.
Then the buckets arrive at the discharge-opening H, they begin gradually to close, as the water passes away, until they arrive at the point j, when they are entirely closed, and remain so till they pass the point d again.
My improved wheel will operate equally well in a horizontal position, as I have shown itin this example, or in a vertical plane, either arranged with the throat E at thetop or bottom; and, in practice, I prefer to cast the body-portion of the same with a central hub and arms, connecting the hu-b with the periphery, the side faces of the rim being provided with annular rings, against which the top and bottom scroll-plates shall be made tofit, to prevent the water escaping toward the centre of the wheel.
`Having thus described my invention,
I claim as `new, and desire to secure by Letters The arrangement, eccentrically within the scroll D, of the buckets B, and cycloidal-shaped top and bottom plates of the core A, whereby the buckets are lopened bythe direct action only of the water through the throat E, and commence to close by the side of the scroll at the near end of the bottom discharge H, and continue closing, to the point j, from which point, to the point (l, they remain closed, all as herein described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention me, this 17th day of March, 1868.
' J. B. PARK.
