MALAGHI BROWN, OF EAST SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,878, dated January 27, 1880.
Application filed August 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
1 Be it known that I, MALAGHI BROWN, of East Saginaw, in the county-of Saginaw and State of Michigamhave invented a new and valuable Improvement in Curtain -Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my invention applied, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional elevations thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in curtain-fixtures; and the nature of the invention consists in'a certain novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully shown and described.
The object of the invention is to devise means for admitting light and air into a room from the top of the sash without producing a draft downward. I
In the annexed drawings, the letter A dosignates a window-frame having the usual upper and lower sash. To the upper part of this sash are secured the brackets B B, that afi'ord bearin gs ,to a roller, 0, having at each end, inside of the brackets, the spaced collars a, be-
second drum, 1), the inner collar, 0, of which is ratcheted, as shown in Fig. 2. Pivoted to bracket B is a vertically-vibrating lever, 0, having in its end an eye, 0, and provided with a projecting arm, 0 acting in connection with ratchet c as a pawl.
D indicates vertically arranged metallic guide-rods, the upperends of which are inserted in sockets d in the under side of the brackets B B. and their lower ends in steps or sockets d in metallic plates d secured to the jambs of the frame. These rods are usually square in cross-section, but may be of any other polygonal form and of any desired length. They are arranged one at each side of the frame, and serve as guides to the vertically-movable brackets J J. These are usually branched, and provided at the ends of said branches with sleeves z, adapted to receive the guiderods aforesaid. These brackets afford bearings to the curtain-roller K, and are supported from the drums b by means of the cords f.
Should one or both of the above sliding brackets become broken, new ones can be attached. This .is accomplished by removing the sockets d and sliding the broken brackets off the ends of the rods D, so that new ones can be easily adjusted in their places withvery little time and expense, whereas in the brackets 110w in use, if broken, the rods are of such construction as not to admit of their replacement, because their end connections will not permit the broken brackets to be removed.
g indicates a cord secured to the drum 1) of the upper roller, wound around the same a suf ficient number of times, and carried through the eye of the pawl-carrying lever C. By drawing upon this cord outward the leverpawl O is disengaged from the ratchet, and, the curtain L being weighted, the brackets J J descend, carrying with them the roller and admitting light to a room from the upper part of the frame. It being desired to shut out the light thus obtained, the pawl is disengaged from the ratchet, as before, the cord 9 pulled down, causing the upper roller to be rotated and the suspending-cords f wound upon their drums, thus raising roller K and the curtain L as high as may be desired. This roller has upon its end a drum, h, and outside of bracket J a ratchet-wheel, j, a cord, j, being wound upon this drum, as above described. The bracket J has pivoted to it a vertically-vibratin g lever,N, having an eye, 0, in its end and a pawl, O, engaging the ratchet-wheel. Cord j extends through the eye 0 of the lever N, and by drawing upon it the latter is disengaged from the ratchet-wheel,when, by letting out said cord, the weight of the curtain causes the roller to rotate and reel off the curtain, or by drawing upon it the roller is rotated and the curtain wound. The cord being released, the lever vibrates downward by gravitation into engagement with the ratchet-wheel and locks the roller against further rotation.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a curtain-fixture, the brackets B B, havall combined to operate as shown and deing the sockets (Z 01, secured to the top of the scribed.

the roller 0, having the drums b b, and the removable brackets J J provided with slid- I ing sleeves z, engaging said rods D, the cords ff, secured to the drums, the suspending ends 10 of which are fastened to said brackets J J,
