To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL LONGANEOKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Window-Shades; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to lettersof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a face view of the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a face view ofinvention applied, the curtain-being given a triple fold. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of hanger or support.

Fig. 4: is an enlarged rear elevation of same, one cord being free. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross section of the curtain in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross'section of the curtain in Fig. 2. Figs.7 and 8 are details of the weight roll.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in window shades, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a shade having a simple, convenient and efficient means of improved character, whereby the whole or any part of a window may be covered as may be desired, there being no winding or unwinding of the shade upon a roller required.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a shade, constructed and arranged in accordance with this invention, and having attached to each end portion thereof an operating cord B, B.

O designates the hanger and support which is provided with means for holding the-said cords in any desired position. This hanger or support consists of a frame, designed to be secured to the upper portion of a window casing over the window, or it may be if desired secured to the window frame. At each end portion of this frame is a depending arm D, and to each of these arms is pivoted aswinging lever E, having at its lower portion an eye 6, through which is passed the respective cord. At the central portion of said frame are two depending arms or lugs B, which are shorter thanthe arms D, and which have their end portions bent or turned backwardly at substantially right angles, forming guides and supports for sliding cam devices G,G. These cam devices consist each of a substantially triangular piece, having a straight upper edge, which slides against the portion f of the 4 to be operated.

A small wheel may be used for heavy curtains in lieu of the lugs on the short arms.

II is a weight roll, which is supported in the fold of the curtain and to which may be attached the fringe I, by means of a rod J.

This rod J may be attached to the roll H by means of the small perforated plates or brack-. ets 11', secured to the ends of the roll as in Fig. 7, or the end portions of the said rod may be bent as in Fig. 8, to engage sockets or bearings in the end portions of the roll, small nails or pins j being driven into the roll to form bearings for the end portions j of the said rod. The curtai'n is passed through between the said rod J and the roll.

The operation is as followsz-By pulling or slacking (as the case may be) on the cord B,

. the inner portion of the curtain may be raised or lowered as maybe desired, thus folding the curtain upon itself, leaving any portion of the window, up to one-half, uncovered. By giving a lateral pull to the string, the lever E is rocked in a corresponding direction, sliding the cam device G onto the cord, and holding it securely on the guide. An opposite pull partially withdraws the cam device, and re leases the cord. By pulling or slacking upon may be similarly operated, while by slacking bothlcords simultaneously, the entire shade may be lowered from the top. It will be apthe cord B, the outer portion of the curtain.

parent therefore that by means of these cords, the shade may be made to occupy any desired position.

In Figs. 2 and 6, I have shown a modification, wherein the curtain, instead of making one fold back upon itself as above described, may be made to make a triple fold, thus leaving a greater portion of the Window uncovered. This is accomplished by making a loop K in the shade to which loop the end of one cord is attached instead of to the end of said shade. This loop forms a support for the roller II, which is loose with flanged ends to keep it in place, the fringe being attached in the usual manner at the lower end of the curtain.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a Window shade having one or more folds upon itself, and a weight roller supported in the fold thereof, of operating cords attached to the shade upon opposite sides of said roller, the overhead hanger, its pivoted levers and guides, and the sliding cam pieces engaged by said levers and arranged to hold the cords against said guides, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a window shade, the two cords attached thereto at different points, the weight roller supported in the fold of said shade a bent fringe rod secured to said roller, a fringe attached to said rod, the overhead hanger, its pivoted levers, and guides, and the sliding cam pieces engaged by said levers and arranged to hold the cords against said guides, substantially as specified.

3. In a window shade hanger and cord holder, the combination with a frame having a guide thereon, and a cam piece slidable in said guide, of a lever pivoted to said frame, an eye in said lever for a cord, and a tongue or extension on the opposite arm of said lever loosely engaging a depression in said cam piece, substantially as specified.
