PORTE-MONNAIE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,789, dated January 20, 1880.

Application filed December 8, 1879.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE U. G. WIL- LIAMSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Porte-Monnaies, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in a porte-monnaie comprising a series of overlapping flexible coin-pockets, each adapted to contain and hold a single coin, and all arranged so that the coin in each is separately exposed to view. When filled with coin such porte-inonnaies are flat and thin, and are more conveniently carried than ordinary pocket-books and purses, in

which the coin gathers in a bulky mass and is cuinbrous to carry, and, moreover, on the porte-monnaie being opened, the amount of change and the denomination of the several coins of which it consists are easily seen, and the exact coin required may be easily picked out.

The coin-pockets may bevel-y conveniently arranged in rows, and they may be formed from a single piece of leather or cloth by folding it in plaits, and stitching it transversely to form pockets.

I also preferably employ metal clips, which lap over the edge of each pocket and facilitate the introduction of coins.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of an open ,portemonnaie embodying my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof on the line a: as, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 represents an end view of the closed porte-monnaie.

Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding parts in both figures.

A designates a porte-monnaie, which, as here represented, has a pocket, B, for bills, &c., and is of similar, construction to those commonly in use.

Arranged upon the inside of the porte-inonnaie is a series of pockets, 0, for the reception of coins, D, of difi'erent sizes and denominations.

Although one side only of the porte-monnaie is here shown as provided with the pockets G, the other sides might also be provided with similar pockets, or the porte-monnaie might have a number of leaves having coinpockets upon one or both sides thereof.

While the pockets G might be arranged in any convenient manner, I have shown them as arranged in parallel rows exteii'iling across from side to side of the porte'monnaie, and the pockets of each row partly overlap the pockets of the row next above it. These pockets may be formed in any convenient manner; but I prefer to form them, as here represented, by folding a piece of leather or cloth in over lapping plaits and stitching the folds transversely, as here shown, by rows of stitching a.

In order to facilitate the insertion of coins in the pockets 0,1 preferably fasten to the edge of each pocket a clip, I), of U-shaped form, which embraces the edge of the pocket, and the ends of which are furnished with points which penetrate the leather or cloth and secure the clip in place. These clips prevent the coins from catching on the edge of the pockets and tearing them, as might be the case were the edges unprotected. I

My porte-monnaie enables a coin of any denomination to be very quickly selected and withdrawn, as they are all exposed, and, as

the severaldenominations are arranged in separate rows, coins may be selected in the dark without trouble.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A porte-monnaie provided with a series of overlapping flexible coin-pockets, each ca pable of containing and holding securely within it a single coin, and all arranged so that.

the coin in each is separately exposed, substantially as and for the purposespecified.

2. In a porte-lnonnaie having a series of pockets for coin of different denominations, a I

series of rows of pockets .made of a single piece of leather or other material folded in plaits and stitched transversely at intervals, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with the pockets G, of the metal clips b, embracing the edges thereof and secured thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
