Description
H. ADAMS. Vegetable-Crusher.
Patented Jan., 20, I880.
UNITED STATES HAWLEY ADAMS, on NEW YORK, n. Y.
VEG ETABL E-C RUSH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,689, dated January 20, 1880.
Application filed October 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAWLEY ADAMS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mashcrs for Potatoes and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mashers for potatoes and other articles; and it consists in a drum for such a masher composed of two longitudinally-separable sections provided on its exterior with spirally-arranged mashing-teeth, which are so disposed over the surface that they may be drawn from a mold, and therefore cast integral with the section of the drum from which they extend. One of the sections of which the said drum is composed is provided with journals, and with lugs which overlap the ends of the other section, and are adapted to receive securingscrews for fastening the two sections together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a masher embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan of the lower section of the cylinder of the same, and Fig. 4. is a view of the rotary drum and the mashing-teeth thereof.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A A designate the cylinder of the masher,
consisting of two longitudinal semi-cylindrical sections, made of cast metal, such as iron, and provided, in this ,instance, at the meeting edges, with lugs, through which pass rodsuniting the sections together. The lower section is provided with feet a, whereby the masher is supported. B designates a hopper, arranged on the periphery of this cylinder near one end, for supplying the same with p0- tatoes or other articles.
B designates a delivery-opening at the end of the cylinder farthest from the hopper B. O designates a straight row of mashing-teeth, arranged in the interior and along the top of the cylinder A A, and D designates teeth arranged crosswise in the cylinder on each side of and in line with the first tooth of the row of teeth 0 nearest the hopper B. E designates a row of teeth arranged spirally along the bottom of the interior of the cylinder A A.
G G designate a rotary drum, composed of two longitudinal sections, G and G, likewise made of cast metal, such as iron. One section, G, has journals 1), upon which the drum rotates in bearings c in the cylinder A A, cast with it, and lugs d, which overlap the other section, G, and, in connection with screws 0, serve as means whereby the two sections are secured together. This drum is provided with series of mashing-teeth I, spirally arranged, and disposed so as to intermesh with the teeth 0 and E in the cylinder A A. These teeth in the cylinder and on the drum, by intermeshing, serve to mash the potatoes or other articles introduced into the cylinder, and, owing to their spiral arrangement, serve also to feed the same toward the deliveryopening B of the cylinder.
A crank, H, applied to one of the journals of the drum, servesas a means for rotating it.
The teeth D prevent the potatoes or other articles from passing along the cylinder without being mashedby the other teeth.
The teeth in the cylinder and on the drum are so disposed that they will draw from a mold, with the exception of certain of the teeth on the drum, which require the previous breakin g or drawing away of part of the mold.
By constructing the masher so that it may be made of cast metal I materially cheapen it,
p and, moreover, obviate jointswhich would result from the union of parts made separate, and wherein the articles mashed might lodge and sour, and therefore the masher is greatly improved.
What I claim as my inventiomand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A drum for a masher for potatoes or other articles, composed of two longitudinally-separable sections provided upon its exterior with spirally-arranged mashing-teeth arranged over their surfaces, substantially as described. whereby they may be drawn from a mold, and therefore cast integral with the section of the drum from which they extend, substantially 5 as specified.
2. In a masher for potatoes and other articles, a rotary drum composed of two longitudinally separable sections provided with spirally-arranged mashing-teeth, and one section of which is also provided with journals, and with lugs overlapping the ends of the other section, for the reception of securing-screws, the said drum being adapted for use in connection with a cylinder provided upon itsi-nterior with intermeshing mashing-teeth, cer- 1o tain of which are arranged spirally to effect the feed of potatoes or other articles, substantially as specified.
