Description

UNIT D S'rA'rEs a'rniv'r FFICE.
JOHN S. WARREN, OF FISHKILL 5 ON THE HUDSON, EVV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-PULP SCREENS AND DRESSER? Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 11 337217, dated February 17, 1874; application filed December 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. WARREN, of Fishkill-on-the-Hudson, Dutehess county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Pulp Screen and Dresser, of which the following is a specification: i:-
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved screen, the top screen-plate being removed. Fig. 2 is a detail'vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line a m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1.
The invention will first be fully described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
A represents the vat into which the pulp is put to be operated upon. B is a shaft, which passes longitudinally through the vat A, and revolves in bearings attached to the ends of said vat. To one of the projecting ends of the shaft B is attached a pulley, O, to which the power is applied. To the end of the shaft B is attached a small gear-wheel, D, into the teeth of which mesh the teeth of the large gearavheel E attached to the outer end of the short shaft F, which revolves in bearings atvof the screen I, so that the said screen I may be revolved very slowly while the shaft B is revolved much more rapidly.
The screen I may be made with four or any desired number of sides, and its sides are slotted in the manner of ordinary paper-pulp screen-plates.
One end of the screen I revolves loosely upon the shaft B, and in the center of its other end is formed a large hole, in which is inserted a short tube, J, which revolves in or upon a short tube, K, secured in a hole in the end of the vat A. The tubes J K open into a tube or spout, L, attached to the end of the vat A, and from the upper end of which the pulp is discharged. To the shaft B within the tubes J K, and fitting into the inner one of said tubes,
is attached a small propeller-screw, M, to draw 7 the pulp from the screen I, and force it out through the spout L, enabling it to be discharged at a higher level than the point at which the pulp stands in the vat A. To the shaft B, within the screen I, are attached four or more oblique plates, N, inclined in opposite directions with respect to each other, and which are carried around by and with the shaft B inits revolution, so as to give the necessary pulsations to the pulp to draw it through the slits of the screen-plates forming the sides of the screen I.
I11 large machines, the plates N may have their outer parts curved in opposite directions to give more pulsations to the pulp.
In the plates N, near their centers, are formed openings 0, to allow the pulp to pass through as it passes toward the dischargeopening. To the angles of the screen I are attached plates P, which proj ect toward the shaft B, between the plates N, and are designed to prevent the pulp within the screen. I from receiving a rotary movement from the friction of the plates N. To the angles of the screen 1, especially when said screen is made with more than four sides, are attached outwardlyprojecting flanges Q, to give the proper agitation to the pulp within the vat A.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The oblique pulsation-plates N, inclined in opposite directions from each other, in combination with the shaft B and screen I, rotating at different velocities, and with the vat A, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the inwardly-project- IVitnesses: JAMES T. GRAHAM,
T. B. Mosnnn.
