PULVERIZBR.
Patented Mar. 3, 18.91.
WIZ/VESSES M a m Z- UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
SAMUEL B. FRANK, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDW'ARD B. POLK, OF SAME PLACE.
PU LVERIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,674, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed June 11, 1890. Serial No. 355,096. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. FRANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to pulverizers, and has for its object the preparation of dirt or sand for brick-machines.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of the different parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure l is a side elevation of my pulverizer. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a front view of my semicircular arms carrying the rollers.
Like letters of reference denote like parts throughout the figures.
On the inside of a cast iron frame A is located a cylinder B, journaled in either side of the frame A and provided with the usual drive-pulley O. The frame A is provided with an ordinary hopper or opening a in the top and suitable legs 0. A series of revolving scrapers D, having blades d, are situated inside the frame A, the bottom scraper D being just at the opening 02, from whence the pulverized dirt is deposited. The other scrapers are situated at a given distance from the center of the cylinder B. These scrapers are all arranged in the front portion of the frame A, although there may be one or more such scrapers on the opposite side or on the rearof the machine, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Between the cylinder 15 and the scrapers D is located a series of small cylindrical rollers E. These rollers E are j ournaled at either end in a semicircular arm F, which is fulcrumed at its lower end in the sides of the frame A. The arms Fare connected by a bar f, extending across the machine and rig- ,idly attached to each of said arms. This bar f has a screw-threaded aperture, into which is inserted a screw-threaded adjusting-screw G, having a broad foot 9 to prevent its becoming separate from the bar f and a wheel-handle H.
A screw-threaded bearing h is formed in the frame A for the adjusting-screw, and by turning the handle of said screw in one direction the bar f and the arms F, carrying the rollers E, will be moved toward the cylinder B, and turning the handle of the adjustingscrew in the opposite direction the rollers E will be moved from the cylinder B.
It will be observed that one scraper D is arranged to scrape the small rollers, while the scraper D is arranged to scrape the large cylindrical roller B and the lower small roller E, so that each small roller has its outer surface thoroughly scraped. If it is desired to have the dirtmade into very fine particles,
the adjusting-screw is simply operated, which Will bring the top roller near the cylinder B, the next roller will come a degree closer to the said cylinder, while the last or lower rolleris still closer to the cylinder, thus making the, space between the large cylindrical roller and each of the small rollers less or smaller than the roller above it-that is, the pressure of the small rollers on the dirt or sand is regularly gradated by means of the arm F and bar f, actuated by the adjusting-screw G.
Power is imparted to the large cylinder or roller through the medium'of a belt Ifrom an engine to the pulley O. The small rollers and scrapers are driven by suitable connectingbelts to the main pulley O.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular number of small rollers or to the number of scrapers shown, as I reserve to myself the right to use a less or greater number of each without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a pulverizer,- the frame A, the cylindrical roller B, and the scraper D, in combination with the rollers E, adapted to be adjusted so as to form a graduated space between themselves and the roller B, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a pulverizer, the combination of the large roller B, the scrapers D, located on either side of the said large roller, with the roller E the semicircular armfulcrurned in the sides of the frame A, the rollers E, journaled in said semicircular arm, the barf, having a screwthreaded aperture, and the adjusting-screw, IO substantially as shown an d described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
