UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEWITT O. KINSELL, OF MOUNT AYB, IOWA.
FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,520, dated January 13, 1880.
Application inea May 31,1879.
SELL, of Mount Ayr, in the county of Ringgold and State of Iowa, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates;`
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view in the line .fr nu in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a sectional view in theline y y in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a gate embodying my invention.
This invention relates to thc construction of farm-gates and their supports or hinges, more especially for use with wire felices; and it consists in forming the gate of horizontal main wires and oblique brace-wires, connected with vertical side rails and central supportrail or hatten by means of staples.
The invention also consists in extending the wires of which the gate is constructed, and forming the extended ends into eyes or loops for fastenings for the gate when closed.
The invention further consists in gate hinges formed of wires secured by staples to the post, and interlocked with eyes formed on the wires of which the gate is constructed; and it further consists in combinations and constructions of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A is the hinge-post, and B the latch-post. C D are the vertical side rails of the gate, and E a vertical hatten or support for the central parts of the horizontal wires F F F. The wires F are secured to the rails C D and hatten E by staples G, and may be further secured by winding them around the parts, as shown at Fig. 2. The end f of the wires next the post B may be extended and turned back upon themselves, as shown by the wire F at Fig. 3 of the drawings, and twisted to form eyes f', which may be engaged with catches b on the post B to secure the gate when closed.
H I are oblique brace-wires, also secured to the rails C D and batt-en E by the staples G. The lower end of the brace-wire I-I `encircles the rail D with the wire F, and is twisted with said wire to form latching-eyesf.
The lower end of the brace-wire I eucircles the rail D with the wire F, and is twisted therewith to form eyes f, which engage with catches b on the post B. y
The ends of the wires F F F next the post A are bent to t'orln hin ge-eyes ai.
.I J J are short wires, interlocked one with each eye a, and secured to the post A by staples j. The wires J and eyes a form the hinges, upon which the gate may be swung to open or close it-in the evident manner.
This gate may be used as a tarm-gate in any kind of felice, but is specially applicable to wire fences, as it can he formed, principally, of the wire used in making the felice.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The wire F', secured to the side rails, C D, by staples or otherwise, and its end formed into eyes j", in combination with the post B, having catches b, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. The horizontal wires and oblique wires attached to the side rails, O D, as described, and their extended ends twisted and formed into eyes f, to operate in combination with and as fastenings tothe post B, having catches b', substantially-as and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with wires forming parts of a gate, and having their ends formed into hinge-eyes a, wires J, interloclted with the eyes a and secured to the post A, to form hinges for the gate, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DEWITT C. KINSELL.
