No. 223,137. Patented Dec. 30.1879.
FZFJZ O F o Y a O :5 fl A o o 5 O E J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. L. HOLMES AND WILLIAM E. LAWRENCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223, 137, dated December 30, 1879 application filed June 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEARLEs E. L. HOLMEs and WILLIAM E. LAWRENCE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Curry- Goinbs, of which the following is a specifica tion.
Our invention relates to that class of currycombs in which a mane-comb is supported by the comb proper and itconsists in constructing the same, as fully described hereinafter, so as to afi'ord a support for the scraper, brace the mane-comb, strengthen the comb proper, and facilitate the attachment of the grasping device at the back.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a comb, showing our invention; Fig. 2, a plan view.
The body A, constituting the comb proper, may be constructed in any suitable form, and the mane-comb B may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. We prefer, however, to employ the construction and arrangement set forth in the patent granted to us April 23, 1878, in which the mane-combis connected to brackets E, attached to the body, as shown in the accompanying drawings.
In order to avoid the necessity of employin g an additional tool as a scraper, or of placin g the latter at the back of the comb, as heretofore, where it would prevent the use of a grasping device over the back, we combine the scraper with the inane-com b, thereby permitting the independent use of the mane-comb, scraper, and curry-comb without interfering with the back-graspin g device, which may be applied to or above the back in any suitable manner.
The construction which we prefer is shown in the drawings, where the manecomb is provided with a sharp flange, a, which projects forward, constituting the scraper, while it further strengthens the comb and imparts the necessary rigidity to enable it to support the outer ends of wires or rods 1), that extend to or toward the handle and constitute the backgrasping device of the comb.
It will be seen that these rods further serve as braces to support and strengthen the parts to which they are connected, and stifl'en the whole structure. When desirable the rods may be detachably connected to the handle or to the manecomb and scraper, permitting the latter to be detached.
A cheap and ready construction consists in casting the mane comb, scraper, and backgrasp in one piece, the back-grasp being either adapted for attachment at its inner end to the handle or to the back of the curry-comb, and if desirable the knockers or brackets E may also be cast in one piece with the mane-comb.
We. claim- The combination, in a curry-comb, of the mane comb B, scraper a, and comb body A, supporting both the mane-comb and the scraper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
G. E. L. HOLMES. WM. E. LAWRENCE.
Witnesses CHARLES E. FOSTER, E. STEPHENSON.
