rI'his invention relates to a doorstop and door holder.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device located remote from the plane of a door opening and which is operable by the opening and closing movement of the door mounted therein, whereby the said device is adapted to serve, at the will of the operator, as a doorstop or door holder.
Another important object of my .invention is to provide a device of the class described which is adapted to be mounted level with the surface of the floor proximate the door with which the same is operably associated or connected so as not to present an obstruction of any kind over which one may trip or stumble when the door is closed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described suitable for use in connection with schoolroom doors which device is so constructed that the same is not readily accessible to one desiring to tamper therewith and at the same time simple and inexpensive t construct and insta-1l.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be hereinafter referred to or become apparent from the following description thereof written in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my device with certain parts removed and others broken away to show the channel member and trigger rod mechanism extending between the doorstop and its control mechanism.

Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that my device comprises a rod I0 mounted in any suitable housing or casing, such for example as in a channel II having a cover I2 adapted to 55; be suitably secured thereto for reasons to be hereinafter described. The rod I0 serves as a motion transmitting means and extends from a point within a trigger box I3, secured in any suitable way to one end of a channel II, to a bolt socket I4 similarly secured to the other end 5 of said channel. In the embodiment of my invention here shown both the socket I4 and the box I3 are provided with ears I5 by which they are bolted, riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the channel II. The bolt socket I4 is closed at the bottom, as at I6, and the trigger box I3 is provided With an upper cover II and a bottom plate I8. Both the cover II and the plate I8 are removably secured to the box I3 in any suitable vvay and are adapted to be interchangeably secured to the top` or bottom of the box for reasons to be hereinafter stated. lt is to be noted, however, that the box I3 in the embodiment shown, extends to one side of the channel II. One end of the rod I0, referred to above, extends into the box I3 through a vertically elongated opening or'slot I9 formed in the side thereof at a point between the ears I5.
A plate 2D, having a pair of parallel ribs 2| is slidably mounted in grooves within, and at one end of, the box I3, which grooves are formed by means of guide strips 22 disposed respectively on the sides of the box at a point spaced from the inner surface oi one end of the box and parallel thereto. It will be understood that the plate 20, and either end thereof, may be inserted into the box I3 from either side thereof, for reasons to be hereinafter explained. A levern 25, having one end 26 pivoted between the ribs 2l and the other end 2l operatively engaging the rod Iii is adapted to operate the rod through the medium of a trigger 28 pivoted at 29 on the ribs 2l above the said lever 25. The trigger 28 comprises a cam 3E) adapted to project from the box I3 through an opening 3| formed in the cover I'I. Any suitable means, such as a screw and lock nut 32 shown herein as mounted on the lever 25, is provided for adjusting the relative positions of the lever 25 with respect to the trigger 28, and the elevation of the cam 30 above the box cover I1.
Welded or otherwise secured to, or formed on, the rod I0, at a point intermediate its ends, is a short bearing 33 by which the rod I0 is rockably mounted in the channel II on a fulcrum 34 secured therein. The fulcrum 34 comprises two side pieces 35, 3E for rockably coniining the bearing 33, the former being higher than the latter to permit rod I0 to be elevated and moved endwise into the box I3 to provide for the aslilil sembly thereof with a bolt to be hereinafter described.
A vertically elongated opening 40, similar to the opening I9 in the box I3, is formed in the bolt socket I4 between the ears I5 to permit the other end of the rod IU to cooperate with a bolt 4I slidably mounted in the socket I4 by engagement with any suitable means, such as a notch or hole 42 formed in the side of the bolt whereby the bolt is moved vertically in the socket, as hereinafter described.
The bolt mechanism above described is adapted to be mounted permanently below the nished surface 45 of the floor 46 and in front of a door 41 mounted by hinges 48 to a frame 49. When so mounted, the door 41 is adapted to be held open by the bolt 4I or the said bolt is adapted to serve as a stop for the dooras hereinafter described. It will be understood that the device may be mounted in any suitable way in concrete below a wooden floor with the upper surface of the trigger box I3 and bolt I4 flush therewith, as illustrated in Figure 2, or may be mounted in any type of monolithic floor.
An angle plate 50 having a trigger cover 5I is secured to the bottom of the door 41 proximate the hinged edge thereof. A door holder 52 having a plate 53 is secured to the bottom of the door at the edge thereof remote from the hinged edge aforesaid. The holder 52 is provided with a socket 54 .adapted to receive the bolt 4I, as shown in Figure 3, when the holder is positioned above the same. Means 55 on the side of the holder 52 is provided for carrying a bump-er 56 made of any suitable material such that when the door is opened against the bolt 4I, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3, the bumper 56 and bolt 4I will serve as a doorstop. The holder 52 also comprises a plunge-r 51 and a collar 58 slidably mounted therein and spring means 59 abutting the lower wall of the socket 54 normally urging the plunger upwardly against any suitable cover 6I secured to the top thereof. The lower end of the plunger 51 passes through a hole 62 in the upper wall of the socket 54 whereby the plunger 57 is adapted when the bolt 4I is in position in the socket, to push the bolt downwardly out of engagement with the socket 54 and to a point even with the lower surface of both the holder 52 and plate 53.
In the embodiment `of the invention here shown, the bolt mechanism comprising its channel, box and socket means above described as a housing, is disposed in the floor on a line generally normal to the plane of the opening in which the door 4l is mounted and in a plane passing through the hinges 4B mounting the said door for opening and closing movement.
Referring no-w to Figures 4 and 5, it will be understood that as the door 41 is opened the angle plate 55 eng-ages the cam 3D on the trigger 28 and presses the same downwardly with the result that the end 2l of the lever 25 will depress the end of the rod IU which is disposed in the trigger box I3, rock the rod on the fulcrum 34 and elevate the bolt 4I. As here sho-wn, the device is positioned so that the bolt 4I will be elevated above the floor to form a stop for the door as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 when the door has lbeen moved through an opening movement of approximately sixty-live degrees. When the device is so positioned, it will be understood that the bolt 4Iy is also adapted to enter the socket 54 and hold the door open after the same has been turned through an opening movement of approximately ninety degrees; the engagement of the bolt and socket being effected by stepping upon the bolt and depressing the same with the foot against the yielding resistance of the rod I so that the door and socket can be moved over the bolt whereupon the bolt 4I will be elevated into the socket 54 by the flexibility yof the rod I, hence it may 4be said that the rod I0 is a preferred embodiment of a yieldable connecting means between the bolt and trigger mechanism.
It will also` be understood that my bolt mechanism may be mounted in the floor in front of the wall in which the door 4'! is mounted and disposed at an angle of preferably more than ninety degrees with respect to the wall, in which case the bolt 4I will not be elevated lby the door until the same has been opened through a correspondingly greater angle, and with the further result that the door-stop and holder is thereby adapted to stop and hold the door in open position after the same has been turned through an opening movement of more than ninety degrees.
When it is desired to release the door holder, as shown in Figure 3, the plunger 57 is depressed by the foot until the bolt is flush with the floor and the door closed in the usual Way.
From Figures 2 and 5 it Will be seen that the trigger cover Iv is a rigid structure forming a part of the plate 50 and prevents the operation of the cam 30 to elevate a bolt 4I when the door is closed, as well as precluding one from tripping over the cam.
If it is desired tov mount the mechanism above described for operation with a door hinged at the right-hand edge thereof, that is, on the edge remote from that shown in Figure 1, the box I3 may be inverted and secured as above described to the channel II -by means of the lears I5 so as to extend to the .other side of the channel II. It has been described above that the cover I'I and plate I8 are constructed to be removably and interchangeably secured to the top or bottom of the box I3. It will also be understood that the ears I5 above described are centrally positioned on the side of the box I3l so that the box may be assembled to the channel in a manner which will permit the box to extend either to the right or left thereof as desired, The only other change in the assembly of the mechanism whereby the same will be adapted for use With a right hand door as distinguished from a left hand door, here shown,r would be to invert the plate 2U and its associated parts above described, so that the trigger mechanism would at all times extend through the top of the box irrespective of the side from which the same projects from the channel II.
Various modifications in the configuration, composition and disposition of the component elements which in combination constitute my improved doorstep and holder may occur to those skilled in the art, hence the foregoing description of my invention is intended as an aidv in understandingV the terminology of the appended claims andnot to unnecessarily limit the same.
What is claimed is:
1. A mechanism of ythe class described, comprising stop means adapted to be mounted in a floor for movement toan operative position above the surface of the oor from lan inoperative position flush with the said surface thereof, in combination with means operable by a. door with which the same is adapted to be associated for moving said stop means from inoperative position to operative position when s-aid door is open, said operable means comprising connecting means suiiciently yieldable to permit the stop means to be forced downwardly at the will of an operator from operative to inoperative position without otherwise moving said operable means.
2. A mechanism of the class described, for use with a door mounted in a doorway-for opening and closing movement, comprising stop means for the door mounted in a iioor for movement .to an operative position above the surface of the floor from an inoperative position flush with the said surface thereof, in combination with means operable by the door for moving said stop means from inoperative position to operative position and return when said door is opened and closed,
said operable means comprising connecting means suinciently yieldable to permit the stop means to be pressed downwardly at the will of an operator from operative to inoperative position while the door is :open to effect a holding engagement between said door and the stop means upon a further opening movement of said door and upon the return of said connecting means to the position from which an operator may have caused it to yield.

A doorstep :and holder mechanism of the class described comprising in combination a bolt socket and a trigger box connected by means of an elongated housing forming a unit adapted to be mounted beneath the surface of a floor with the t-op of the socket and box flush with the surface of the floor, said trigger box and housing being operably engageable in either of two positions vdepending upon whether said unit is for use with .a `door hinged at either the right hand or left hand edge thereof, a rod fulcrumed in said housing with one end thereof extending into said trigger box and the other end extending into said bolt socket, a bolt in said socket cooperating with one end of said rod, and trigger means in said box cooperating with the other end of said rod, said trigger means being adapted for operable engagement by .a door with which the mechanism is associated, whereby the bolt may be moved from inoperative to operative position by said trigger means to serve as a stop or holder for the door.

A door stop and holder mechanism of the class described comprising in combination an elongated housing means, motion .transmitting means operably mounted in said housing means, doorstop and holder means cooperating with one end of said transmitting means, and trigger means cooperating with the other end thereof, said trigger means and motion transmitting means being operably engage-able in either of two positions depending upon whether' said mechanism is for use with la d-oor hinged at either the right hand or left hand edge thereof, said housing being .adapted to be mounted in a iioor at an angle with respect to a door mounted in a doorway and with said doorstop and holder means located remote from the doorway and occupying an inoperative position iiush with the surface of the iioor proximate said doorway; said trigger means being adapted for operable engagement .by the door with which the said mechanisrn is associated, whereby the opening movement of said door is adapted to actuate said trigger means and move the doorstop and holder means into operative position above the fioor.

A doorstop and holder mechanism of the class described comprising in combination an elongated housing means, .a yield-able rod fulerumed in said housing means, a bolt cooperating with one end of said rod, and trigger means cooperating with the other end thereof, said housing being adapted to be mounted in a floor at an angle with respect to a door mounted in a doorway and with said bolt located remote from the doorway and occupying an inoperative position iiush with the surface of the floor proximate said doorway; said trigger means being adapted for operable engagement by the door with which the said mechanism is associated, whereby the opening movement of said door is adapted t-o actuate said trigger means .and elevate said bolt into operative position above the floor.

A doorstop and holder mechanism of the class described comprising in combination a bol-t socket, and a trigger box, .connected by means of a housing forming a unit adapted to be mounted in the iioor with .the tcp of the socket and the top of the box flush with the surface of the floor; a yieldable rod fulcrumed in said housing with one end thereof extending into said trigger box and .the other end extending into said bolt socket, a bolt in said socket flush with the surface of the vfloor and cooperating with one end of said rod, and .trigger means in said box cooperating with the other end of said rod, said rod and trigger means being adapted for movement by the opening movement of a door with which the said mechanism .is associated to actuate a boit and move the same from .an inoperative position flush with the surface of the floor to an operative position above the floor, and said rod being adapted to yield and permit the depression of the bolt from operative to inoperative position while said trigger mean-s is maintained in the position to which it was operated by said door.
