The present invention relatesto afdetent device which is particularly adapted intended for use in retaining in inoperative position the locking bolt for a door, whenv the f door `has once'been opened, thereby insuring that the door will not be retaineddiin its movement to open position by engagement between the lockinoQ bolt and any part ofthe door frame or floor adj ae'ent'the dopr.y

At the forward part of the body portion` there is a downward extending lug 16, and' formed integrally with this lug and extending on both sides of the body portion is a plate 1'? and this plate at its central portion has an extension 1S which has an opening 19 extending therethrough. The provision against, tipping action is quite essential in a device of this kind, inasmuch as if; there be tipping action it will bind the .bolt rod, and so prevent proper functioning of they bolt rod and may perchance` lock the rod against movement and so prevent openingy of the door, and also prevent closingthe door;

p Itis necessary to use, in connection with the detent device, a striker plate, and such a form. of. striker plate is indicated in Fig. 5. Itconsists of a base portion 22 which has an extension 23 lying inthe same plane t as the part 22 and :trom the extension 23 there is ay right angled extension or plate 24. 2 and 3 and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5;. Behind thisV plate and in the frame of f the door there is a recess such as indicated at 1a, which receives the end of the bolt rod 3 so that the same'inay pass entirely through the opening 22h when the bolt rod is in its uppermost position.
When the rod 7 is operated and the bolt f rod 3 is draw-n downwardly, the detent member 11 is shot outwardly by the spring 13 and lies in position above the bolt rod 3 so that if the bolt rod is subsequently released, it cannot moveupwardly because hindered by the detent 11.
In devices of this kind the bolt rods suoli as the bolt rods` 3, and 4 are operated together by the mechanism which moves them,
l asffor instance, the mechanism contained in thelcasing 6, so that when the bolt rod 3 is v y'held down by the detent 11, the bolt rod 4 is maintained in its uppermost position, and there'toreboth bolt rods are held out of engaging position with the floor or with the door frame.
When the door is moved to closed position the detent member 11 engages with the plate 24 which pushes it inwardly and as soontas the plate 24 moves beyond the bolt rod 3, the same may shoot upwardly behind the plate.
It will be noted that the body portion of the detent member and the extensions 9 and 10 as well as the retaining bar or plate 17 are formed as an integral structure which while not essential is desirable, inasmuch as it makes a rigid structure which permits of mounting on the top of the door in such a fashion that the device cannot tip or move with respect to the door.
Having described my invention, l claim- 1. A latch retaining detent itor doors or the like comprising a body portion, a depending member at one end oit said body portion, a second dependingr member at the other end of the body portion, a transversely extending plate cooperating with the second mentioned depending member, said plate being provided with means by which it may be attached toa door or the like.
2. A/latch retaining detent for doors or the like, comprising a body portion, a downwardly extending member at one end of said body portion, a second downwardly extending meinbei' at the opposite end ot said body portion,a transversely extending plate associated with the second mentioned member, said body portion being hollow and having an opening, a spring pressed latch member within the said hollow body portion and adapted to project within the opening therein.
3. A latch retaining detent for doors or the like, comprising a body portion, spared downwardly projecting members, a transversely extending plate cooperating with one of said downwardly extending members, said body portion being hollow and having an openino` therein and a latch within said Vhollow boidy and adapted to extend through the opening therein.
4. A latch retaining detent for doors or the like comprising a body portion which is hollow and having an opening, a spring pressed latch member within the said hollow portion and adapted to extend through said opening, said body portion having spaced downwardly extending projecting portions,.

7. The combination of a door of a detent member mounted at the upper portion of the said door, said detent comprising a body portion with spaced downwardly extending parts, the said body portion and downward ly extending parts being mortised into the door, the said body portion of the detent being hollow, a spring pressed latch member within said hollow portion and extending WILLIAM B.
