. liiompys ZSheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Patented Jan. 7, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICIE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to copyholders and embodies a rack having means for supporting the same upon a desk or others supporting structure and provided with a vertically adjust- 5 able pivoted arm adapted for engaging and holding sheets of typewritten material, manuscript or a book in position on the rack.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the pivoted arm.
Figure 4 is an end elevational view.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the vertical guide for the arm.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional View taken substantially on a line 6-6 of Figure 1, and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the slidable bracket for the pivoted arm.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, where in for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates an upright back-board having a forwardly extending flange 6 at its lower edge and to the under side of which is secured a pair of rubber suction cups 1 adapted to secure the board in upright position on a suitable supporting structure, such as a desk, table or the like.
To the front surface of the board, adjacent one side edge thereof, is a vertically extending block 8 secured to the board by screws or the like 9 and to the inner vertical side edge of which is secured a vertical guide bar IU of substantially U-form with its end projecting into the block from the side thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Slidably mounted on the guide I is a bracket ll preferably formed of sheet metal and having a pair of care l2 projecting in parallelism from the opposite edges of the bracket, each of the ears being provided with aligned openings lit for slidably mounting on the guide rod Ill. Each of the ears l2 are also provided with aligned openings I4 for pivotally accommodating the down-turned end I of a clamping rod l6 adapted to extend across the face of the board 5 for holding the manuscript ll, book or the like, in position on the bottom flange thereof.
A coiled spring l8 is mounted on the downturned end 15 of the clamping rod, one end of the spring as shown at l9 being adapted to engage a stop lug 20 formed on the lowermost car 52 of the bracket I I and the other end of the spring extending outwardly along the clamping rod and having an upturned extremity 2| for engaging the rod to yieldably urge the rod inwardly against the manuscript ll.
It will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 6 of the drawings that the end IQ of the spring which bears against the lug 20 will force the bracket l l against the block 8 and the bracket is thus frictionally held in vertically adjusted position on the guide rod l0, although the clamping rod and the bracket are adapted to be manually adjusted vertically on the guide rod into the desired position.
It is believed the details of construction, advantages and manner of use of thedevice will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. A copyholder comprising a back board adapted for supporting in an upright position, a vertically extending guide rod carried by the board, a bracket including a pair of spaced parallel apertured ears slidably mounted om the rod, a clamping arm having an angular inner end pivotally carried by said ears, said arm extending across the front of the board and a coil spring mounted on the angular end of said arm, one end of the spring engaging the arm to urge the same against the board and the other end of the spring engaging the bracket to urge the same into frictional engagement with a stationary part of the board.
2. A copyholder comprising back-board adapted for supporting in an upright position, a vertioally extending guide rod carried by the board, a bracket including a pair of spaced parallel apertured ears slidably mounted on the rod, a flat handle on the bracket, a clamping arm having an angular inner end pivotally carried by said ears, said arm extending across the front of the board and a coil spring mounted on the angular end of 50 said arm between said ears, one end of the spring engaging the arm to urge the same against the board and the other end of the spring engaging the bracket to urge the handle into flatwise frictional engagement with a stationary part of 55 the board.
