N PETERS. PHOTO-LITHQGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. n. a
UNITED STATES PA OFFICE- JHERBERT M. SMALL, OF BALDWINSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS;
IMPROVEMENT IN PADS FOR CAI RPETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,605, dated December 16, 1879; application filed October 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, HERBERT M. SMALL, of Baldwinsville, of the town of Templeton, of the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pads for Carpets; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, which is a transverse section of one of .my improved carpet-pads.
In manufacturing it, as shown, I employ three layers, A B O, of paper, one of which, (J, I place between the others, A B, and by paste or .cement alternately cement itto them, as shown at a b c d 6, so as to form between the two outer layers, A B, a series of insulated pockets or receptacles for holding paddings f, of excelsior or other suitable inate rial.
The two layers or sheets A B, I usually join or paste together at their next adjacent edges, preferring to fold one sheet, A, upon itself, near each of its edges, and lap thefolded parts on the other sheet, and fix thereto the laps by paste or cement, all being as represented.
I would remark that in thus making the padding-holder it becomes composed of a flat tube of paper and an interposed partition of like material connected atintervals alternately to opposite sides of the tube, so as to form in the tube a series of separate pockets or receptacles extending lengthwise or breadthwise of the tube, and being to hold a series of paddings or stuffings and keep them apart from one another.
Instead of joining the outer sheets at .their edges they maybe there disconnected, though each may be connected at intervals with the intermediate sheet or layer, in manner as described.
To prevent the padding from moving lengthwise in its pocket they may be connected by a narrow layerof cement laid on the middle of the bottom of the pocket throughout its length.
By so making a carpet-pad, or carpet-lining, as itis usallytermed in commerce, lam enabled to keep the padding equally distributed within the case of holder, or prevent the padding from moving therein and packing too much in one or more places. Furthermore, by means of the intervening sheet, G, connected to the sheets A B alternately, as shown, the said sheets A B are preserved to advantage from separating or moving too far apart from each other, and the fabric or pad is rendered stronger and better in other repects than it would be if made with two sheets without any connection-sheet interposed between and fixed to them at intervals, as set forth.
I claim as my invention as follows:
1. As an improved manufacture, a carpetpad composed of a series of fibrous paddings and three layers of sheet material or paper, arranged as set forth, and having the intermediate layer fixed or cemented to the others i or outer layers at intervals, substantially as described, so as to form separate pockets or receptacles for receiving the paddin gs, as speci- 2. A carpet-pad padding-holder composed of the three layers of paper or sheetmaterial. and having the intermediate layer connected at intervals or alternately to the outer or other layers, substantially as described, so as to form between them a series of separate poek- 4. As an improved manufacture, a carpet-y pad composed of a'series 0t fibrous paddings and three layers of sheet material or paper, arranged as set forth, and not onlyhaving the intermediate layer fixed or cemented to the others or outer layers at intervals, substantially as described, so as to form separate pockets or receptacles for holdingthe paddings, but having each of the paddings secured lengthwise to its pockets by a narrow layer of cement, as set forth.
