Description

R. B. GRIFFIN. Butter-Package.

INVENTOR:

UNITED STATES PATENT RUSSELL B. GRIFFIN, )F OSAGE MISSION, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LUTHER J. BEAGLE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,810, dated November 18, 1879; application filed April 29, 1879.
10 tall whom 'it may concern: i
Be it known that I, RUssELL B. GRIFFIN, of Osage Mission, in the county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a butter-package that perfectly protects the butter from weather, dust, 850., and which can conveniently be used as a buttertray.
Further, the object of my invention is to provide a package by which the butter of every farmer can be kept separate, and. thus obviate the necessity of mixing in one firkin the different butters of the several farmers.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a butter-package having its sides beveled or curved, and lined with cotton or linen cloth overlapping on top, and having two straps of metal, wood, or card-board, &c., to strengthen it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is a section on 'the line 40 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line y 3 Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A are two pieces of wood, to which the top and bottom are fastened, and at their ends are either beveled, rounded, or curved. The
top B and bottom D overlap the sides A, and can be made either of plain or enameled wood' -per'board, or wood, 850. The screws, pegs,
850., that fasten the bottom to the sides also pass through these strips.
The bottom D and ends F F of the box are lined with linen or cotton cloth E, which overlaps under the cover, as shown at F, Fig. 2. The lining of the box is of the full width of the bottom, and is cut oft flush with the outside edges of the same, as is very clearly shown at H, Fig. 3.
The bottom of the box can either be curved, rounded, or beveled.
As the cloth that overlaps on the top of the butter is wider than the outside width of the box, this cloth, resting on the top edge of the sides H H,will form a packing between the under side of the lid B and the upper edge of the side A, thus preventing any injurious or unclean substances from coming in contact with the butter.
A butter-package of this kind has decided advantages. It keeps the butter fresh and clean, has a neat appearance, can be used as a package and as a tray, a number can be easily packed up in a barrel, 850., for shipping, and they can be made of various sizes, according to the difi'erent quantities of butter produced on the several farms.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a butter-package, the combination of sides A A, top B, bottom D, and ends F with a continuous textile lining passing into the joints formed by the top, bottom, and ends with the sides A A, substantially as herein shown and described.
, RUSSELL BIGELOW GRIFFIN.
