IMPROVEMENT IN DRESSING-CASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,533. dated November 11, 1879; application filed August 18, 1879.

'To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK KOSKUL, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dressing-Gases; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the in. vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it .appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which v Figure 1 is a perspective View of a dressing-case embodying one form of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section, representing a somewhat modified construction; and Fig. 3 is a plan or top view, applicable to both of the preceding figures.

This invention relates to an improvement upon the dressing case orcabinet shown and described by me inan. application for Letters Patent filed on the 22d day of April, 1879,

the nature of which said improvement will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.-

In the drawings, A is a dressingcase, provided with a set of drawers, a, a, and preferably with a flat top, A. The top is cut away or recessed to receive the sliding drawer B, which works between side pieces, 0 0, raised above the top of the case, and united at their rear ends by a top piece, D,

Drawer B is provided-with a sliding cover, which may be pushed backin. under the stationaryhalf-cover B when it is desired to gain access to the articles deposited in the drawer without pulling this out.

My present improvement consists in constructing the said sliding cover in two parts, E E, which are hinged together in the middle, as shown at 2, so that the upper part or section, E, may, when the cover is in its normal or closed position, be unfolded or extended in front of the case, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, so as to form a convenient desk-flap for writing, reading, and similar purposes, which may be supported by the partially-extended sliding drawer B.

It is obvious that, if desired, the arrangementof the drawer B, with its sliding deskcover, may be modified in several ways with out deviating from the spirit of my invention. For example, instead of having a single drawer in the middle of the case, as shown on the drawings, this may be made with two drawers, one at each end, in which case only one of them is, by preference, provided with the desk attachment. Again, instead of folding down one fiat upon another, as in Fig. 2, the parts E E may be arranged as illustrated in the perspective view, Fig. 1-4. 0., the lowermost section, E, lies flat upon the drawer, and is provided at its rear end with araised shelf, f, having a series of compartments, in which an inkstand, envelopes, and other writing utensils may be placed, while the paper is placed in the triangular space between the two parts E E, which forms a convenient receptacle for the same when the upper hinged flap, E, is folded down in its closed position.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A dressing-case, cabinet, or analogous piece of furniture, provided with a recess formed by the sides 0 O and stationary top piece, D, drawer B, sliding in the said recess, and halfcover composed of two hinged sections, E E, sliding at their joint or hinge in grooves or ways in the stationary sides 0 O, and adapted to be pushed up, when folded, under the top piece, D, and unfolded or extended in front of the case upon the partially-extended drawer B, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
