My invention relates to garment hangers constructed of paper and having a frame provided with a cross frame member and two side frame members pivoted thereto and adapted to be connected together at their free ends, and particularly to garment hangers constructed from strips of paper bent to form flanges at the free ends of the side frame members.

An object of the invention resides in providing free ends of the side frame members and holding the same in position.

Another object of the invention resides in constructing the hook'so that, when properly applied, the side frame members are securely held from disengagement.

A still further object of the invention resides in providing a construction by means of which the hook may be easily and quickly attached to the side frame members.

Another object of the invention resides in pro-' viding a hook constructed of relatively light wire and in forming the hook so that the same will ofier an appreciable resistance to straightening out when the loaded hanger is subjected to repeated shocks.

Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/or described.

In the use of garment hangers, constructed from paper and having a separate metal hook formed of wire, it becomes desirable to hold the hook from movement relative to the side frame members. The present invention overcomes this difficulty by providing a construction whereby the hook may be rigidly attached to the side frame members. With such types of garment hangers considerable difficulty is encountered in a hook or supporting member attached to the threading the hook through the flanges of the side frame members. The present invention overcomes this difliculty by providing a clip having twisted reaches adapted to permit of twisting the hook, as the same is applied, to facilitate 5 the attachment of the hook to the garment hanger. Where shocks are repeatedly given to a garment hanger, as where the loaded hanger is transported in an automobile, the hook portion frequently straightens out and causes the gar- 10 ment hanger to become disengaged therefrom. The present invention overcomes this difficulty by constructing the hook portion with a bight which is located to one side of the vertical medial plane of the support where greater rigidity is procured 15 than where a uniformly curved hook is employed or a hook with a bight at the center of the same is employed.

The garment hanger illustrated, comprises a frame ID, constructed with a cross frame mem- 20 her II and two side frame members l2 and I3. The frame members l2 and I3 are hingedly connected to the frame member II and are adapted to be folded into substantial alignment with said cross frame members when collapsed, or to be 25 extended obliquely therefrom when in operative position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, in which case said frame members converge. These frame members are longer than one-half the length of the cross frame member ll so that said frame 30 members become disposed in the form of a triangle when erected.

Thegarment hanger further includes a hook or supporting member I by means of which the hanger is supported and which is attached to the ends of the side frame members l2 and I3.

The ;frame I0 is constructed from paper which is folded in the manner shown to provide the cross frame member II with flanges l5 and I6 and a crown I! connected to the same. The paper 40 from whichth'e frame is constructed is also folded to provide the side frame members I2 and I3 with flanges l8 and 49 and a crown 21 between said flanges. The frame members II and I2 are further constructed so that thecrowns 2| become reduced near the free ends of said frame members, whereby the said flanges may be arranged parallel to one another in overlying position, as illustrated.

The flanges I8 and H! are provided with open- 50 ings 23 at their ends which are adapted to register when the parts are assembled and through which the hook I4 is inserted, as will be presently described. The ends of said flanges are cut in the shape of an are, thereby forming notches in the crowns 2|, of the frame members 12 and I3, which in conjunction provide a recess 24 in the uppermost portion of the frame .III. The manner of constructing the frame 10 has been fully described in the application of myself and Richard B. Lewis, Jr., Serial Number 112,963, flledNovember 27, 1936, and forming no particular feature of the instant invention will not be described in detail in this application. As will become apparent, the instant invention may be used with any type of garment hanger having overlying flanges as well as with the construction disclosed in said application for patent.

The hook II, as shown in Fig. 5, is constructed of wire which is bent as illustrated. This hook has a hook portion 25 which opens outwardly, being formed with a curved part 30 and a free end 26 extending. therefrom. The hook portion 25 is adapted to be hooked about a pole, rod or any other suitable support, such as indicated at 21 in Fig. 6. The end 26 of the hook portion 25 is straight and is bent angularly from the curved part 30 to form a bight 28 therebetween which is adapted to occupy the position, shown in Fig. 6, when the hook is applied to the support.

Depending from the hook portion 25, is a shank 29 which terminates in aclip 3|. Clip 3| consists of two spaced reaches 32 and 33, the reach 32 forming a continuation of the shank 29 and being bent angularly with respect thereto, as indicated at 34. These two reaches are connected together by means of a connecting portion 35. At the upper end of the reach 33, is, provided a finger 36, which extends substantially at right angles to the reach 33. The end of the finger 36 terminates in a lug 31 which faces downwardly. The reach 3 3, of clip 3|, is angularly disposed with reference to the reach 32, though situated in a plane parallel with a plane containing said first named reach. These two planes are parallel to the plane of the hook 25 and the connecting portion 35 is at right angles to all of said planes. The reaches 32 and 33 are twisted to such an extent that the distance between the lug 31 and reach 32 is about the same as the connecting portion 35.

The manner of erecting the garment hanger is as follows: The frame l0 comes collapsed with the frame members l2 and I3 folded into overlying positions with respect to the frame member H. When desired for use, the two frame members l2 and I3 are swung outwardly and the flanges 'l8 and I9 thereofsqueezed together at their ends. The flanges l8 and I 9, of the two side frame members l2 and I3, are next assembled with one of the flanges of each side frame member disposed between the flanges of the other side frame member, as shown in Fig. 1. The flanges are then adjusted with respect to one another until the various openings 23 register with each other. Due to the forming of the ends of said flanges on a curve, as indicated at 22 in Fig. 1, the notches formed thereby make the recess 24 at the uppermost portion of the frame l0 and betweenthe various flanges of the side frame members l2 and i3 as previously described.

In applying the hook, the free end 23 thereof is inserted through the registering openings 23 and the hook portion 25 and shank 29 threaded through the same until the parts take the position as shown in Fig. 2. The various flanges are next threaded upon the reach 32 and at the same time are forced into the space 38 between said reaches, as shown in. Figs. 3 and 4. As

viewed in Fig. 3 the plane. of the hook 25 is at right angles to the plane of the frame ll. After the hook has been thus far applied, the same is manipulated to bring the connecting portion 35 into the openings 23. This is accomplished by drawing the hook further into the said openings and giving the same a twist to bring the aforementioned plane of the hook portion 25 parallel to the plane of the frame "I. At the same time, the lug 38 is forced into the recess 24. This causes the parts to occupy the position, shown in Figs. 1 and 6.

When the hook has been applied to a support, such as designated at 21 in Fig. 6, the bight 23 extends outwardly of the vertical medial plane of the support and connecting portion 35, which plane is designated by the reference numeral 39. I have found that, by constructing the part 30 of the hook portion curved as illustrated and the end 26 thereof straight and forming a bight at the position shown, far greater resistance is afforded to the opening ,up of the hook'than where the bight is in the medial plane, or where a hook curves throughout its extent is utilized;

The advantages of my invention are manifest. The hook is easily applied to. the frame of the garment hanger. hook is rigidly secured in place making it extremely easy to apply the hook to the support. By means of the construction of the hook portion of the hook greater strength is procured. The

- improved hook can be constructed at no additional cost, as compared to hooks previously used for the purpose. v

Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A garment hanger comprising a frame including side frame members having overlapping parts constructed with registering openings therein, a hook having a clip for engagement with said pfinings. and a hook portion connected When once in position, the

therewith, said clip having reaches extending along the sides of said over-lapping parts and a connecting portion therebetween extending through said openings, said reaches being disposed in planes parallel to the plane of said hook portion and being angularly arranged with respect to one another to facilitate application of said hook to said frame members.

2. A garment hanger comprising a frameincluding side frame members having overlapping parts constructed with registering openings therein, a hook having a clip for engagement with said openings, and a hook portion connected therewith, said clip having reaches extending along the sides of said over-lapping parts and a connecting portion therebetween extending through said openings, said reaches diverging with respect to one another from said connecting portion and a-flnger formed on the end of one of said reaches and extending inwardly toward the other reach, said clip being adapted to be twistopenings, said clip having reaches extending along the sides of the overlapping'parts, and a connecting portion therebetween extending through said openings, said reaches diverging with respect to one another from said connecting portion and a finger formed on the end of one of said reaches and extending inwardly toward the other reach, said clip being adapted to be twisted in application to the hanger to bring said finger out of engagement with said frame, a shank issuing from the other reach, a hook portion issuing from said shank, said shank being bent at the locality of issuance from said reach to bring the other reach substantially in alignment with the connecting portion of said clip and the center of said hook portion.

In combination with a cylindrical support, a garment hanger comprising a frame, a hook connected thereto having a hook portion provided with a curved part and a straight end disposed in the plane of said hook portion forming a bight with said curved part, said hook portion being adapted to be applied to. said support with the straight part in engagement with the surface of said support to one side of the vertical medial plane of the support and the curved part engaging the cylindrical support at a locality in close proximity to the vertical medial plane of the support and with the bight free from the support.

5. A garment hanger comprising a frame including a cross frame member and side frame members pivoted thereto, said side frame members having over-lapping parts constructed with registering openings therein, a hook having a clip for engagement with said parts, said clip comprising spaced parallel reaches adapted to flt against said overlapping parts, a connecting reach between said first named reaches extending through said openings and a finger associated with one of said reaches and overlying the uppermost portion of certain of said side frame members and restraining disengagement of the hook from said frame and a lug on said finger extending between the over-lying parts of said side frame members.

A garment hanger comprising a frame ineluding a cross frame member and side frame members pivoted thereto, said side frame members being constructed of paper and folded-to provide over-lapping flanges, the ends of said flanges being notched at the vicinity of the adjacent portions thereof to provide a recess between said notches when the flanges of one side frame member are assembled with respect to the flanges of the other side frame member, said flanges having registering openings therein, a hook for securing said side frame members together, said hook having a clip provided with a reach extending through said openings and means on said clip extending into the recess formed between said side frame members and holding the hook erected.

A garment hanger comprising a frame including a cross frame member and side frame members pivoted thereto, said side frame members being constructed of paper and folded to provide over-lapping flanges, the ends of said flanges being notched at the vicinity of the adjacent portions thereof to provide a recess between said notches when the flanges of one side frame member are assembled with respect to the flanges of the other side frame member, said flanges having registering openings therein, a hook for securing said side frame members together, said hook having a clip constructed with spaced reaches adapted to engage the outermost of the flanges of said side frame members, a reach extending through the openings in said flanges, a finger extending across the uppermost portions of certain of said side frame members and a lug on said finger adapted to enter into the recess formed between said side frame members.

8. A garment hanger comprising a frame including a crossframe member and side frame members pivoted thereto, said side frame members having over-lapping parts constructed with registering openings therein, a hook for securing said frame members together, said hook comprising a. clip having two spaced reaches and a reach connecting the same, one of said reaches lying along the outer surface of one of the side frame members, said connecting reach extending through said openings and the third reach lying along the opposite outer surface of said frame members, said spaced reaches being disposed in parallel planes and arranged angularly with respect to one another and a finger on said last named reach ex ending across the uppermost portion of certain of said side'frame members.

9. A garment hanger comprising a frame including a cross frame member and side frame members pivoted thereto, said side frame members having over-lapping parts constructed with registering openings therein, a hook for securing said frame members together, said hook comprising a hook portion, a shank connected thereto, a clip connected to said shank andhaving a reach extending downwardly in continuation of said shank and lying along the outer surface of one of said side frame members, a second reach extending through said openings, substantially at right angles to said first reach and issuing from the lowermost portion thereof, a third reach extending upwardly from the second reach and disposed along the opposite outer surface of said frame members in spaced relation with reference to said first reach, and a flnger issuing from the upper end of the third reach and extending across the uppermost portions of said side frame members and toward said first reach.
