My invention relates to garment hangers constructed of paper and having a frame provided with a cross frame member and two side frame members pivoted thereto and adapted to be connected together at their free ends, and particularly to a garment hanger constructed from a strip of paper bent to form flanges at the free ends of the side frame members, and has for an object to provide a'hook or supporting member attached to the free ends of the side frame members and holding the same in position.

Another object of the invention resides in constructing the hook so that when properly applied the side frame members are securely held from disengagement.

A still further object of the invention resides in providing a garment hanger in which the hook is held in rigid position to the frame.

Another object of the invention resides in constructing the hook with a clip adapted to extend through the flanges of the side frame members, and in constructing the clip with a finger adapted to engage portions of said frame members to prevent disengagement of the hook from the frame members.

A still further object of the invention resides in constructing the clip with a part disposed in the crotch between the side frame members of the hanger.

Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and trated and/or described.

The present invention is an improvement over the invention of myself and Richard B. Lewis, Jr., Serial Number 112,963, filed November 27, 1936. In the invention disclosed in said application for patent, the hook connecting the two. converging frame members together, was satisfactory in most respects although it had the disadvantage of sometimes becoming accidentally disengaged from frame members. The. instant invention overcomes these difliculties by providing the hook with a finger which engages the sideframe members in a. manner to prevent unintentional disengagement of the hook therefrom.

The garment hanger illustrated comprises a frame l constructed with a cross member II and two side frame members I2 and I3. The frame members I2 and I3 are hingedly connected to the frame member II and are adapted to be folded 5 into substantial alignment with said cross frame members when collapsed, or to be extended obliquely therefrom when in operative position, as illustrated in Fig. l, in which case said frame members converge. These frame members are longer than one-half. the length of the cross frame member II so that said frame members become disposed in the form of a triangle when erected.

The garment hanger further includes a hook 35 by means of which the hanger is supported and which is attached to the ends of the side frame members I2 and I3.

The frame I0 is constructed from paper, which is folded in the manner shown to provide the cross frame member H with flanges l5 and I6 and a connecting portion H. The paper from which the frame is constructed is also folded to provide the side frame members l2 and I3 where the same issue from the cross frame member 5 ll with flanges l8 and I9 and a connecting portion 2| between said flanges. The frame members II and I2 are further constructed so that the connecting portions 2| become reduced in width near the free ends of said frame members, whereby the said flanges may be arranged parallel to one another in overlying position-as illustrated.

The ends of the flanges I8 and I9 are cut in the form of an arc,'as indicated at 22 in Fig. 1, and are provided with openings 23 which are adapted to register when the parts are assembled and through which the hook I4 is inserted, as will be presently described. The under portions of the two frame members l2 and I3 form a crotch at their juncture indicated at 32. 4

The manner of constructing the frame ID has been fully described in the application for patent above referred to and forming no particular feature of the instant invention, will not be again described in this application. As will become apparent, the instant application may be used with any type of garment hanger having spaced overlying flanges as illustrated.

The hook 35, as shown in Fig. 4, is'constructed of wire which is bent as illustrated. This hook has a hook portion 36 which opens outwardly being formed with a free end 31, and is adapted to be hooked about a. pole, rod or any other suitable support on which the garment hanger is to be supported. Depending from the hook portion 24 is a shank 88, which terminates in a clip 38. Clip 38 consists of two horizontal reaches 4| and 42 connected together by means of a vertical connecting portion 43. At the end of the reach 42 is a finger 44 turned inwardly and substantially parallel to the reach 43. It will be noted that the reach 4i issues at right angles to the shank 38.

The use of the invention is as follows: The end 31 of the hook 35 is inserted into the openings 23 of the flanges I8 and I9 of frame members l2 and I3, and the said end and-shook portion, as well as-the reach 4| threaded through the openings 23 until the reach 43 extends through said opening as shown in Fig. 3. The finger 44 is then forced beneath the lower edges of the flanges l8 and i8, and at the same time the hook swung back so that the reach 4| is shifted into the holes or openings 23. As the parts are being so manipulated, the finger 44 is brought around upon the outermost flange l8 and the reach 42 in the crotch 32 between the frame members 18 and I9, as shown in Fig. 2. When so arranged, the reach 4i extends through the openings 23 and the garment hanger becomes supported thereon. Due to the fact that the shank 38 is disposed on one side of the flanges and the reach 43 on the other side, the flanges are held together. The reach 42 being disposed in the crotch 32 of the frame, and the finger 42 engaging the flange l8 on the same side as the shank 38 these parts are firmly held in position and disengagement of the hook from the side frame members is prevented.

The advantages of my invention are manifest.

An extremely simple and practical construction is provided by means of which the hook is securely attached to the frame of the garment hanger. By means of the finger utilized, unintentional disengagement of the hook from the frame is prevented.

Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Subject matter disclosed but not claimed in this application is claimed in my copending application Serial Number 185,381 filed January 17, 1938.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

I claim:

1. A garment hanger comprising a frame including across frame member and side frame members pivoted thereto, said side frame members having over-lapping parts constructed with registering openings therein, a hook for securing said side frame members together, said hook comprising a shank, a clip having a reach bent outwardly from said shank at right angles thereto, another reach issuing outwardly therefrom and parallel with said shank, a third reach issuing therefrom and parallel with said first named reach, said shank being adapted to lie along the outermost surface of one of said frame members, said first named reach extending through the openings in said frame members, said second named reach extending along the outermost surface of the frame member on the opposite side of the hanger, said third named reach extending below said frame members and means issuing from said third named reach and engaging the same surface as said shank, said means holding the hook from disengagement from said frame members.

2. A garment hanger comprising a frame having two converging side frame members forming a crotch therebetween, said frame having an opening therein disposed in proximity to said crotch, a hook comprising a clip for attachment to the frame, said clip having a part extending through said opening and another part disposed in said crotch, said parts restraining movement of the clip in the plane of the frame.

A garment hanger comprising a frame having two converging side frame members forming a crotch therebetween, said frame having an opening therein disposed in proximity to said crotch, a hook comprising a clip for attachment to the frame, said clip having a reach extending through said opening, another reach issuing outwardly therefrom and disposed along one side of the frame, a third reach issuing from said second reach and parallel with first named reach, said third named reach being disposed in said crotch and means issuing from said third named reach and engaging the opposite side of said frame.

4. A garment hanger comprising a frame having two converging side frame members forming a crotch therebetween, said frame having an opening therein disposed in proximity to said crotch, a hook comprising a shank, a clip having a reach bent outwardly from said shank, another reach issuing outwardly from said first named reach and parallel with said shank, a third reach issuing from said second reach and parallel with first reach, said shank being disposed adjacent one side of the frame, said first named reach extending through said opening, said sec ond named reach being disposed adjacent the opposite side of the frame, said third named reach being disposed in said crotch and means issuing from said third named reach and engaging the frame on the same side as said shank.

5. A garment hanger comprising a frame having two converging side frame members forming a crotch therebetween, said frame having an opening therein disposed in proximity to said crotch, a hook comprising a clip for attachment to the frame, said clip being constructed in the form of a C and extending through said opening and being disposed in said crotch, said clip restraining movement of the hook in the plane of the frame.
