J. REICH SOUNDING TOY July 16, 1940.

Patented July 16, 1940 I UNITED PATENT OFFICE I,
v `2,209,389 soUNDING 'roy Joseph Reich, Brooklyn, N. Y. v Application May 19, 1939, serial No. 274,494
4 Claims.
This invention relates to` sounding .toys and more particularly to detonating canes.
The objects of th-e invention are to provide an improved toy of the kind specified'enabling the explosive-holding portion thereof to'be made of sheet metal; to provide a construction wherein the parts are readily shaped and assembled; to obtain rigidity of assembly and ample reinforcement; to avoid parts or construction susceptible to injury in use; to enable the explosive holding assembly to be completely assembled before application thereof to the cane or the like; to provide for proper support and guidance of the movable member of hammer; to avoid likelihood of the cap or percussion element falling from place and yet enable the same to be conveniently applied; to secure simplicity of construction and operation; and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views;
Figure l is an elevation of a sounding toy embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view Von line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 2. 30 In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing, the reference numeral I0 indicates in general a cane having a knob II or other handle at its upper'4 end for aiding in manipulating the same. At the lower end of the cane is mounted the assembly I2 for receiving and exploding a cap I3 or other percussion element.
Said assembly is preferably a housing or holding structure fixed to the lower end of the cane and carrying a movable member or hammer irremovably and operatively therein. The housing comprises an outer member or shell I4 shaped from sheet metal, as by drawing, so as to provide an upwardly extending sleeve or ferrule o I5 at the lower end of which the metal flares laterally forming a transverse shoulder portion I6 from the outer periphery of which the metal 4then bends into a longitudinal direction again to form side walls or apron'portion I'I of the hous- D0 Within, and as the upper wall of the housing is provided a disc I8, also preferably of sheet metal of substantially a diameter enabling it to fit within the apron portion I'I and atwise 55 against the under side of shoulder I6. This disc I8 is held upwardly in place against the shoul 'der by engagement at its underside and nextits edge of the upper edge of an inner cylindrical wall I9 fitting `nicely against the inside of `apron portion I1. This wall I9 is also preferably sheet 5 metal, and as shown, bends inwardly at the bottom part to form a transverse bottom wall 20 with a central neck 2| depending therefrom for receiving and guiding the shank 22 of hammer 23. The lower edge or margin of the outer wall 10 or apron I1 is spun or otherwise crimped or bent in to underlie the outer margin of bottom wall 20 of the inner member, thereby assembling the inner and outer members and the disc in rm relationship to each other. The double thickness 15 of the circumferential wall thus obtained for the assembly gives the desired strength where most needed in resisting damage resultant from striking the cane on the ground.
'I'he apron portion I'I of the outer member is 20 cut away for a part of its circumference to provide an opening 24 for insertion of the cap I3. Similarly, the inner member is cut awayfor a part of the periphery of its wall I9 to cooperate `with the cut away portion of the outer wall for 25 making the desired opening to the interior chamber of the assembly. It will be observed that the two cut away portions mentioned each extend to the ends of the respective members in which the cuts are made, but that the retained cylindrical 30 portion of the outer member above the cut forms the upper edge of the completed opening and the retained cylindrical portion of the inner member below the cut forms the lower edge of the completed opening. These mentioned re- 35 tained cylindrical portions above and below the cut away portions accordingly form ledges for retaining the cap from inadvertent dislodgement. Furthermore, the side edges of the opening in the outer member preferably curl in some- 40 what to prevent rotation of the inner member with respect to the outer member.
The movable member or hammer 23 preferably provides a ilat head 25 from which centrally depends shank 22 heretofore mentioned. The head is positioned within the chamber formed by the fixed assembly above described and the shank is of suflicient length to enable it to always protrude below the neck 2l even when the head is raised to engage top wall or disc I8, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 2. y
It will be finally noted that the assembly may be completely manufactured ready for use irrespective of the cane I0, to which it may be applied at any subsequent time and without danger of loss of the movable member or separation of the assembly in the meantime. The cane is inserted in the upwardly open sleeve or ferrule and the ferrule suitably pin-pricked, as at 26, or
otherwise caused to firmly engage the cane to l thereby providing a bottom wall and a doubleV thickness of side wall with one thickness thereofl serving as means for spacing the bottom wallr from the top wall.
2. A sounding toy according to claim 1 wherein both thicknessess of the side wall have cut away portions substantially juxtaposed for providing a cap-receiving opening, and one of said thicknesses forming th-e top edge of the capreceiving opening and the other thickness forming the lower edge of said cap-receiving opening.
3. A sounding toy comprising a detonating can having a housing, said housing comprising an outer shell member having an upper transverse shoulder therein and a sleeve projeoting upwardly from the shoulder, a disc in said shell member resting upwardly against said shoulder and closing the bottom end of the sleeve, an inner member having its upper edge engaging against the margin of the underside of said V,disc and having its. lower part `turned inwardly to form a bottom wall parallel to said disc and spaced therefrom, said shell member having a side wall substantially co-extensive with and surrounding the side wall of the inner member and curled in at its lower edge to retain the inner member seated upwardly against said disc, and a hammer within said housing, said hammer having a' shank protruding from the housing.
4. Alsounding toy according to claim 3 wherein the turned-in bottom wall of the inner member provides a centrally disposed downwardly extending sleeve receiving and guiding the said shank of the hammer. v
