ATTORNEYS Patented July-1 6, 1940 UNITED STATES comma James E. Annen, Kalamazomltiich, assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo, Mich, a corporation of Michigan Application July 18, 1938, Serial No. 219,716
Claims.
like, is easily set up by the user, and is relatively strong and rigid when set up.
Second, to provide a container having these advantages in which the parts may be produced very economically and of relatively light stock.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of I my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A container which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the features of my invention with the cover in position thereon.
Fig. 2 isan enlarged'fragmentary view tical section.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in vertical section illustrating one of the steps in assembling or setting up the container.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section of a slightly modified form or embodiment of my invention.
Ell.
in verthat is, the matter of joining the ends of the strip from which the side wall is formed.
The side wall unit is provided with hoop-like reinforcing members 3 and t which are adhesively or otherwise suitably secured to theside wall at the ends thereof. The rim 5 is preferably formed of sheet metal and is of inwardly facing channel cross section having a narrow flange t at its inner edge adapted to engage the inner edge i oi the reinforcing member 3, the edge constituting a retaining shoulder or ledge for the rim. The lower flange or arm t of the rim is considerably wider than the arm 6 and projects inwardly, in the preferred embodiment being curved upwardly as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This upwardly curved arm 8 of the rim provides 'an upwardly facing channel 9 receiving the lower 5d edges of the side wall and its reinforcing mem Fig. 5 is a similar fragmentary vertical section ber 33. This upturned channel also receives the down-turned flange It on the bottom I I. The bottom H is of such diameter that when it is forced into position it expands and wedgingly retains the side wall within the rim and with its. rim supporting ledge in interlocking relation with the rim.
The manner of assembling is illustrated in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the assembling operation is a very simple one, merely arranging the end of the container side wall within the rim, inserting the end member and forcing it into position.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the outer flange or arm ii of the rim I3 is directed inwardly but does not have a decided curve. It is radially fluted or corrugated at M to stiffen the same. The flange it of the bottom engages within the lower arm of the rim but is not so effectively clamped as in the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the rim I5 is substantially that of Fig. 4 with the exception that the lower am it of the rim has an annular groove-like recess il therein which receives the lower edge of the reinforcing member It. In this instance the reinforcing member projects slightly beyond the edge of the side wall. The bottom it is providedwith a liner it, the edge 20 of which is lapped around theperlpheral edge of the bottom and clamped between it and the wall.
It will be understood that I have not attempted to show the parts in their relative proportions, and that, while the end structure described is particularly desirable as a bottom, it may also be embodied as a top.
In the structure illustrated the top 2! is proj vided with a flange 22 having a reinforcing band it thereon, the flange 20 having telescoped engagement with the reinforcing member tof the side wall. This provides a cover that can be readily put on or taken off as occasion requires, whereas, if the bottom structure illustrated were employed at the top of the container it would be necessary to destroy the top {and upper eri'd of the container to affordaccessto the contents.
I have illustrated and described my invention in embodiments which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describeother embodiments or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having'thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a container, the combination of a fibrous side wall having an external hoop-like reinforcing member at thebotto-m thereof providing a shoulder or ledge, a rim of inwardly facing channel section embracing said reinforcing member and having its upper arm in engagement with the ledge provided thereby and its lower arm upwardly curved and projecting inwardly beyond the side wall, and a bottom having 'a downturned peripheral flange engaged within the lower arm of said rim, said bottom acting to wedge said side wall into retaining engagement with said rim.
2. In a container, the combination of a fibrous side wall having an external hoop-like reinforcing member at the bottom thereof providing a shoulder or ledge, a rim of inwardly facing channel section embracing said reinforcing member and having its upper arm in engagement with the ledge provided thereby and its lower arm projecting inwardly beyond the side wall member, said arm being upwardly curved to present an upwardly facing annular recess between the end of the arm and the web of the rim, and a bottom having a downwardly turned. peripheral flange engaged in the upwardly facing recess of said rim member, said bottom acting to wedge said side wall into retaining engagement with said rim.
3. In a container, the combination of a fibrous side wall having an external ledge at an end thereof, a rim of inwardly facing channel section embracing said side wall and having its inner arm in engagement with said ledge of said side wall and its outer arm projecting inwardly beyond the side wall, said arm being upwardly curved to present an inwardly facing recess between the end of the arm and the web of, the rim, and an end member having an out-turned peripheral flange engaged within the recess of said rim member, said end member being of such diameter as to expand the side wall into the rim when the end member is forced into supporting engagement with said rim.
4. In a container, the combination of a flbrous side wall having an external hoop-like reinforcing member at an end thereof providing an inwardly facing shoulder or ledge, the outer edge of the reinforcing member extending slightly beyond the edge of the side wall, a rim of inwardly facing channel section embracing said reinforcing member and having its inner arm in engagement with said ledge of said side wall and its outer arm projecting inwardly beyond the side wall, said outer arm having an annular groove-like recess therein receiving the projecting edge of said reinforcing member, and an end member disposed within said side wall and being of such diameter as to expand the side wall into the rim and the projecting edge of said reinforcing member into said rim recess when the end member is forced into supporting engagement with said rim.
5. The combination of a side wall having an external hoop-like reinforcing member at an end thereof providing an inwardly facing shoulder or ledge, the outer end of the reinforcing member extending adjacent the end of the side wall, a rim of inwardly facing channel section embracing said reinforcing member and having its inner arm in engagement with said ledge and its outer arm projecting radially inwardly beyond the side wall, said outer arm having an annular upwardly facing groove-like recess therein receiving the outer edge of the reinforcing member, and an end member disposed within said side wall of such diameter as to expand the side wall into the rim and the outer edge of the reinforcing member into said rim recess when the end member is forced into supporting engagement with the rim.
