Description

Juiy 9, 1940. 5, BEHR COMBINED COMB, BRUSH, AND CURLER Filed March 14, 1940 I INVENTOR. Jag/ ived ,Befi/r Patented July 9, 1940 UNITED STATES- COMBINED COMB. BRUSH, AND CURLER Siegfried Behr, Flushing, N. Y., assignor to Ben Hur Products, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application March 14, 1940, Serial No. 323,911
6 Claims.
This invention relates generally to ladies toilet articles and more particularly to a combined comb, brush, and curler.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind that is simple and compact in construction and economical to manufacture.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind that is pleasing, attractive and graceful in appearance. m Another object is to provide such a device that is sanitary.
Yet another object is to provide a device of this kind in which the brush member is readily moved to inoperative position for cleaning purposes.
The above and other objects and advantages will be obvious from the description of the invention to follow taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a side view of the improved, comb,
brush and curler device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1 with the brush stem omitted.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side view of one end of the brush showing the looped end of the stem.
Fig. 5 is a side view showing a modified form of curler or handle.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of part of the device of Fig. 5.
The improved device includes a comb l0 and a curler I l integrally formed and preferably made of moldabie plastic material such as acetate, plastic or the like. The comb comprises a back portion l2 and teeth l3. The back portion I2 is formed with a slotted or cut-away portion H at its upper. edge. An upstanding post orbearing member I5 is formed on the back portion ii! at the rear of the slotted portion I 4 and a similar post or stud H5 at the front of the slotted portion. The curler member N forms the handle for the comb and extends rearwardly from the upper edge of the comb. The curler is circular in cross section and tapers from the comb to its free end resulting in what is called a "rat-tail curler.
A brush member I! is positioned in the slotted or cut-away portion It on the top of the back portion l2. This brush consists of a stem l8 formed of twisted wires between which are secured the bristles 19. The bristles are radially positioned on the stem and form a brush circular in cross section. Looped end 18' of the stem I8 is hinged to the post or bearing member l5 by means of a pivot pin or eyelet 20. It will be noticed that the hinge pin is positioned so that a portion of the bristles l9 project downwardly over and span the upper edge of the teeth and back portion 12 of the comb. The opposite 5 end of the stem I8 is free and is slipped under and behind the overhanging lip portion 2| of a slot 22 formed in the post or stud portion IS. The inherent elasticity of the material forming the comb permits the free end of the stem to 19 ride down over, under and behind the lip 21 where it is held in position by the wall of said lip portion.
When it is desired to clean the brush, it is swung upwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the brush isin downward operative position as shown in full lines in Fig.
1, the stem I8 is more or less hidden from view and only a portion of the bristles extend above the top of the comb giving the entire device a graceful and compact appearance, and the radiating bristles afiord a brushing action following the combing action of the teeth of the comb.
The construction and arrangement of the brush relative to the comb permit the comb and brush to be grasped by the hand when the curler is being used to curl the hair.
In Fig. 5, the curler device is in the form of a bifurcated or two piece tapered handle I l' which is hinged to the member l5 by means of a pivot pin 23. The curler H may be swung downwardly and up over the teeth to collapsed position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. This results in a very compact device which can be carried in a ladys handbag etc.
I claim:
1. A ladys toilet article comprising a comb member having its back portions slotted, a curler member forming an extension of the comb and formed integrally therewith and'a brush member 40 supported hingedly and releasably in said slotted portion.
2. A ladys toilet article comprising a comb member having'its back portion slotted, a post formed on said back portion at each end of the 45 slotted portion, a tapered extension formed integrally with said comb and forming a curler I and a brush member having one end hinged to one of said posts and its other end being adapted to be releasably held by the other of said'posts.
3. A ladys toilet article comprising a comb member formed of plastic material including a back portion having a cut-away portion and a plurality of teeth, a tapered extension forming a handle for said comb and a brush member circular in cross section and having its stem positioned in said cut-away portion so that a portion of the brush bristles extend downwardly over the back portion of the comb and angularly relative to the teeth.
4. A ladys toilet article comprising a comb member formed of plastic material and with its back formed with a cut-away portion terminating in an upstanding post at each end, one of said posts being formed with a slot having an overhanging lip and a brush member having a central stem and radiating bristles on the stem, one end of said stem being hinged to one or said posts and its other free end being adapted A to be inserted into the slot in the other post and to be held in inserted position by the lip of said slot.
5. A ladys toilet article comprising a comb member formed of plastic material and with its back formed with a cut-away portion terminating in an upstanding post at each end, one of said posts being formed with a slot having an overhanging lip, an integral tapered extension circular in cross section forming a handle for said comb and being adapted to serve as a hair curler and a brush member circular in cross section having an axial stem with bristles radiating therefrom, one end of said stem being hinged to one of said posts and its other free end being adapted to be inserted into the slot in the other post and to be held in inserted position by the lip of said slot, said stem being positioned in the cut-away portion of the comb so that a portion of the bristles extend downwardly over the back portion of the comb and angularly relative to the teeth of the comb.
6. A 'ladys toilet article comprising a comb member formed of plastic material and with its back formed with a cut-away portion terminating in an upstanding post at each end, one 0! said posts being formed with a slot having an overhanging lip, a bifurcated tapered extension forming a handle for said comb and being adapted to serve as a curler for the hair and a brush member circular in cross section having an axial stem with bristles radiating therefrom, one end of said stem formed with a loop and hinged to one of said posts and its other end being free and adapted to be inserted into the slot in the other post and to be held in inserted position by the lip of said slot, said stem being positioned in the cut-away portion of the comb so that a portion of the bristles extend downwardly over the upper portion of the teeth of the comb and at an angle thereto.
