TES
PATENT OFFICE PAD HOLDER Evangel A. Haveles, Los Angeles, Calif.
. Application January 18, 1939, Serial No. 251,563
Claims.
My invention relates to a pad holder for holding pads of the type that are perforated near one end leaving a stub when the sheets are torn at the perforation line and may be of the manifolding type. The objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a pad holder of this class i which is easily connected with a table, desk, counter or the like and easily disconnected therefrom;
Second, to provide a pad holder of this class with a specially hinged flap to be positioned under some of the top leaves of the pad for manifolding or other purposes and which serves to facilitate the severing of the upper leaves from the pad;
Third, to provide a pad holder of this class with novel means for supporting the pad at the stub portion;
Fourth, to provide apad holder of this class in which the flap is so supported that it is operable on a very fixed or thin pad adaptable to varying thicknesses of pad;
Fifth, to provide a pad holder of this class in which the flap may be shifted from its relation Sixth, to provide a pad holder of this class in which the pad may be quickly positioned or removed from the holder;
' Seventh, to provide a pad holder of this class which may be used in connection with relatively wide or large pads of either'the manifolding type or straight pads; and
Eighth, to provide a pad holder of this class which is very simple and economical'of construction, easy to manufacture, easy to operate, efficient'in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
' With these and other objects in View as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists oil certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a top or plan View of my pad holder shown positioned on a fragmentary portion of a table or desk showing the flap in solid lines shown pbsitioned on top of the pad and by dotted lines in open out of the way position; Fig. 2 is a rear end view thereof showing the pad support securing member in its relation with a fragmentary portion of a table, desk or the like;
'mentary portion taken from the line l l of Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing:
The pad support I, pad support securing member 2, pad support securing bolt 3, flap member l, pad clamp member 5 and pad clamp member spring 5 constitute the principal parts and portions of I my pad holder.
The pad support i is substantially rectangular in shape and is provided with a fiat portion upon which the bottom of the pad rests. It is provided along one side with an upwardly extending flange portion Ia which supports the pad and prevents it from twisting or shifting thereon. Onthe opposite side is another flange Ibwhich is providedwith two openings I0 and Id. These openings. I c and Id are adapted to provide the clearance for the hinges 4a and 4b of the flap member 4 when the flap member 4 is opened in the dotted line position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The portion removed for the openings I0 and Id is turned backwardly at right angles and forms slotted hinge supporting members Ie and I 1 which are provided with vertical slots lg as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing. It will be noted, however, that these members Ia and 'I f may be separate and supported byreenforcing members Ih and I1 which are secured to the members Ib at opposite sides of theopenings I0 and Id to provide reenforcing for supporting these members Ie and If. Shiftably mounted in the slots Ig are pin members do which are secured to downwardly extending portions 4d on the hinge members do and lb and these hinge members to and 4b extend downwardly and then inwardly and are preferably integrally connected with the flap member 4 as shown in the drawing.v
This flap member 4 is substantially the width of the pad and fits loosely between the flanges Ia and lb and by reason of the particular shape of the hinge members do and 4b and their sliding relation with the slotted members Ie and I f, this fiap may be arranged for positioning between the leaves or on top of the upper leaves of varying thickness of pads positioned on the supports I. This flap member is provided with an extended handle portion 4e which extends outwardly from under the pad or from the end of the pad so that it may be readily grasped for shifting the flap member to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and if desired for severing some of the upper leaves of the pad by grasping the leaves in connection with this flap member and raising the flap member. These flange members Ia and lb are provided with holes near the front end in which is mounted a pin 50. upon which is pivotally mounted the pad clamp member 5. This pad clamp member is provided with a flat upper side portion 5b which is provided with an integral up turned handle portion 50. The fiat portion 51) is adapted to engage the stub portion of the pad near the perforation line at its backward edge. It is provided with backwardly turned side portions 5d, shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawing, which is provided with holes therein through which the pin 5a extends. This member is also provided with a front side portion 5e which closes the front end of the support as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Mounted around the pin 5a is a torsion spring 6, the one end 6a extending up through the portion 512 at the one corner and the other end 5f supported against the end of the member I, thus tending to hold the member 5 in tight relation with the stub of the pad, as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawing, but may be raised by grasping the handle portion 50 and pressing it forwardly for removing or positioning a pad member in position on the support.
In order to support the pad support I so that it may be readily connected or disconnected with a table, desk or the like, there is provideda pad support securing member 2 which is provided with a backwardly extending flange 2a at its upper side which is adapted to fit over the upper side of one edge of a desk, table, counter or the like. It is provided with an ofiset portion 2b which is provided with a slot adapted to receive a downwardly extending lip Ii from the pad support I at the back end thereof, shown best in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. This offset portion is provided with a loop member 20 which is adapted for a string for supporting a pencil to be used in connection with the pad. This member 2 extends downwardly some distance and is provided with a right angle turned portion 2d at its lower end which is provided with a threaded hole 2e which is adapted to receive the bolt 3 for clamping the member 2 rigidly in position with a counter, shelf or the like. This member 2, it will be noted, is provided with reenforcing offset portions 2 f to strengthen the same.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
