Description
N. F. CARTER. Rotary Library Reference Table.
WITNESSES INVENTOR 72 Q Qa/RM/ I i I 441 4 F i) E TTORNEYS.
NPEIERS, FHOTO-UTHQGRAPMER. WASHINGTON, D c
UNITED STATES iPATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN F. CARTER, OF QUEGHEE, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY LIBRARY REFERENCE-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,906, dated September 23, 1879; application filed June 19,1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN F. CARTER, of Quechee, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Library Reference- Tables, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved table, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, partly in section, to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved table for students and others for holding reference-books .and other articles required for frequent use or reference, and which it is desirable to have conveniently accessible.
The invention consists in a rotary table formed of the pedestal, the lower plate or table provided with the two deep drawers and the two shallow drawers, the angular supports forming angular niches, the upper table or plate provided with the slide and drawers,
and the octagonal pyramidal top having one or more of its wide sides hinged at the upper end to the center-piece, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the stand or pedestal upon whiich the table rests and to which it is pivote 4 The stand or pedestal A may be mounted upon casters, if desired.
To the pedestal A is pivoted the center of the table or plate B, which is made in the form of -a square with its corners out 0E. To the corner parts of the table or plate B are attached the lower ends of four right-angled supportspr posts, 0, with their open sides outward and their side plates parallel with the side edges of the table or plate B.
The rounded edges of the table or plate B between the sides of the supports U are provided with moldings b. The angular spaces between the sides of the supports 0 thus form niches to receive statuettes or other articles;
or the side spaces may be provided with small shelves for the reception of small articles.
The upper parts of the angular spaces of the supports 0 may be closed, if desired, for the sake of ornament.
To the upper ends of the supports or posts 0 is attached a table or plate, D, which is made in the form of a square with its corners cut 011', making it eight-sided, the short sides being about half the length of the long sides, or less than half the said length.
To the table or plate D is attached an octagonal top, E, made in the form of a low pyramid. The narrower sides of the top are attached at their lower ends to the table or plate D and at their upper ends to the centerpiece of the said top.
The upper ends of some or all of the wider sides of the top E are hinged to the centerpiece of the said top, which centerpiece has moldings attached to its edges to adapt it to serve as a stand for a statuette or other ornament, or as a receptacle for small articles.
To the lower edges of the wide sides of the top E moldings e are attached, to adapt them to receive reference-books.
Beneath the uppertable or plate, D, is placed a slide, F, which may be drawn out at either side of the table to receive reference-books, or for a place for writing. Other slides can be added, if desired. p
Beneath the table or plate D, and upon the opposite sides of the slide F, are placed two small drawers, G, to receive paper, envelopes, or other small articles.
Under the slide F, on each side, may be formed a small shelf with raised edge to receive paper-cutter, scissors, pencils, and the like.
The side parts of the lower table or plate, B, between the supports 0 are designed to receive reference-books, and the middle partof the said plate or table B may be occupied by a pamphlet-stand or other desired article; or two opposite spaces may be filled with drawers for surgical instruments, bottles, 8210., or with shelves for music, 860.
Beneath the lower table or plate, B, are placed two deep drawers, H, and two shallow drawers, I, to contain any desired articles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and the octagonal pyramidal top E, having as new and desire to secure by Letters'Patone or more of its Wide sideslhinged at the entupper end to the center-piece, substantially as A rotary table formed of the pedestal A, the herein shown and described. lower plate or table, B, provided with the two deep drawers H and the two shallow draw NATHAN FRANKLIN CARTER ers I, the angular supports C, forming angu- Witnesses:

vided with the slide F and the drawers G, MARGARETTA. O. BUEMOND.
