Description

J. L. YOUNGHUSBAND LIPSTICK DEVICE Filed Oct. 24. 1938 March 19, 1940.
QZzz/ez? fir.
Patented Mar. 19, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to a case for holding lipstick having means for projecting the lipstick for use and retracting it within the case for storage during nonuse.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide simple manually operable means for the quick projection and retraction of the lipstick, said means occupying small space not otherwise used in the case, and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment of my invention, yet 15 I Wish it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawing Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the exterior of my lipstick device; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 4.
One embodiment selected to illustrate my in- 25 vention comprises a hollow body member In having side walls I I and open at the top and bottom. Positioned and movable within said body member ID is a cup 20 adapted to hold lipstick 21 or the like.
s Adjacent the upper portion of the body member ID is a bearing 39, and adjacent the lower portion of the body member ID is a turnable member or spool 40.
A cord, chain or continuous member 4| extends 5 as a loop from the bearing member 39 to the turnable member 40. The continuous member 4| is attached to the cup 20.
One form of my bearing member 39 shown in Fig. 2 is a rod 42 preferably positioned across a corner of the interior of the body member I0 and attached to two of the side walls I I. Rod 42 may be either fixed or rotatably attached to the side walls II.
The turnable member 40 is rotatably supported by oppositely disposed side walls I I, or the corners of the same when extending diagonally across the body member I0. Said turnable member 40 extends through the wall of the body member II) on one end, and attached to said end is a wheel 24 manually operable from the exterior of the device.
The continuous member 4! is attached to the cup 20 by any suitable means. The cord 4I may pass through openings in the cup 20 or an extension M of the cup and be bent, looped or knotted so that when the cord M is moved, the cord will 5 also move the cup. Any other suitable means for attaching the continuous member 4| to the cup 20 may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
When the wheel 24 is turned the spool 40 is also turned. When the wheel 24 is turned in one direction the spool 49 moves the loop 4I so as to pull the cup 20 upwardly so that the lipstick 21 in the cup may project from the top. of the body member I0 and be used. When the wheel 24 is turned in the opposite direction the spool 4 turns and moves the loop 4I so as to pull the cap 2i] with its lipstick 2'! back into the body member Ill for storage during nonuse.
A bottom closure 34 is fitted by friction grip within a depression 35 in the lower outer ends of the side walls I I of body member I. A cap 23 is by friction grip within depression 35 at the upper .ends of the side walls II. 25
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
Alipstick device comprising a hollow substantially rectangular tube, a cup adapted to hold lipstick positioned within said tube, a rod extending across a corner of the upper portion of the interior of said tube and attached to contiguous side walls, a turnable member extending through said tube and rotatably supported by opposite side walls adjacent the lower portion of said tube, a loop attached to said cup and extending from and above said rod downwardly along one of the corners of the interior of the tube to and below said turnable member, a wheel manually operable from the exterior of the tube and attached to the turnable member, said wheel adapted upon being turned in one direction to turn the turnable member and in turn to move the loop so as to project the cup with its lipstick to substantially the top of the tube, and upon being turned in the opposite direction to turnthe turnable member and move the loop so as to pull the cup and its lipstick within the tube, and closures for the open top and bottom of said tube.
