IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-STARTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,247., dated September 2, 1879; application filed January 29, 1879.
which is to be applied directly to the wheel 1" or the purpose of starting the car.
It consists of a lever,.A, having fixed at one end a hook or hooks, B, which serve as a fulcrum, and near the same end a long hook, (l, which is pivoted on the lever. On the lever,
also, near the long hook, between it and the shorter one, is shown a shoulder, D, which serves, when attached, to hold the long hook in a nearly perpendicular rigid position.
A short bent arm, E, is also shown, which is sometimes used in lieu of the shoulder, and for the same purpose.
The lever may be constructed of wood or metal. The hooks must be of metal, preferably of iron.
When the hook or hooks B and the hook O are set on the rim of the wheel-, as shown in drawings, a lifting-force applied to the other end of the lever will cause the wheel to turn around a certain distance. A down ward motion of the lever-handle will loosen the gripe of the hooks, so that they may be instantly detached, if desired.
It will be seen, then, that by alternate up ward and downward motion of the lever the wheel can be rolled any distance.
This apparatus is to be applied to car-wheels, for the purpose of starting heavy cars, or cars on slippery rails.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A car-wheel starter composed of lever A, hooks B and G, shoulder D, and arm E, arranged and constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
