I 3 Claims. (01, 2- 174) .My invention relates to improvements in face guards .of a type adapted to be worn over the face while dressesor other articles of apparel are being put on or tried on and removed.

An object of my invention is to provide a de vice which willprotect the facial make-up while garments are being put on and taken off.

A further object of my invention, whether employedin the home, or in a department store in trying on new dresses, is to keep the wearers dresser blouse free from rouge, lipstick, mascara and other make-up. If any of such make-up becomes wiped on the dress or other garment while being put on or taken off, it has left a stain which cleansers have found substantially impossible to remove and much money has been spent in the endeavor to overcome this costly problem.

A further object of my invention is to provide a face guard, which covers the face alone'and which will not disturbthe coiffure.

a face guard having an elastic portion overlying the'top of the forehead and an elastic portion underlying the chin and covering merely the forehead and' face only, so constructed that it will be impossible to remove it by a dress or other garmentjbearing against the chin when being taken off or by bearing against the forehead when being put on.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this description of transparent fabric of'such an open pick that it can be readily seen through and breathed through.

A further object of my invention is to provide a face guard which may be, readily folded'into a small compass so as to take up no more room in a handbag or bag than a pocket handkerchief,

These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of the accompanying drawing 'whichillustrates an embodiment thereof. I v

While any suitable type of fabric may be employed, I preferably employ a. soft pliable nainsock, and being soft and pliable and somewhat absorbent, if it should by anychance strike the wearers face, be of a'type not to appreciably 5" mar the make-up.

Each of these portions it are of substantially one-half the size and configuration of a wearers face and are secured together by the stitching M, or in any other suitable manner along their curved edges H5. The lower end of each portion is preferably provided with a cut-away segmental portion providing the lower edges 68 for insertion underneath the wearers chin. If desired shaped tucks Ziimay be taken in the fabric substantially centrally of the diametric edges thereof to additionallyshape the guard to the configuration of the face.

To retain my improved face guard in position I on the wearers face, I preferably provide elastic 40 means-'22 extending adjacent the upper portions of the diametric edges thereof and elastic means '24'extendingalong said segmental lower edges having the "ends 26 and '28 respectively thereof secured tosaid portions when in expanded condition to freely contract and gather the underlying fabric thereunder, whereby said elastic means. 22 and 24 may freely expand for insertion of the upper portions of the face guard ID'over thetop I of the forehead, ofawearer and the lower porb tion underneath a wearers chin and contract to yieldingly retain said face guard 10 over the wearers face, In my preferred embodiment, hems 30 are provided adjacent the upper portions of the diametric edges thereof to retain the elastic 22 therein and hems 32 are provided along the lower segmental edges for retaining the elastic 24 therein, it being obvious that when said two hemi-circular portions l2 are secured together by the stitching l4 that the respective hemi-circular portions [2 comprising each respective half thereof will become aligned to form tubes and that said expansible

22 and 24 are in expanded condition so that when they contract they may freely gather said tubular hems around them so that the fabric may expand in said gathered hems on stretching the elastic for insertion of the upper portion of the guard over the wearers forehead and the lower portion of the guard underneath the wearers chin and contract in the manner explained to yieldingly retain said face guard over the wearers face.

In practice the hands 36 of the wearer may spread the face guard from a fiat position shown in Figs. 4 and 5 to the open position shown in Fig. 3 and the face guard brought adjacent the face so that the face may bereceived in the hollow portion thereof. As the face guard 10 is inserted over the forehead 38 of the wearer, the elastic 22 will expand for this purpose and as the lower edge [8 is inserted underneath the chin 40 of'the wearer, the elastic 24 will expand for this purpose, permitting the face guard to completely cover the wearers face 42 and strike it only at such points as are free from make-up, such as the nose 44 and chin 46. As no smearing cosmetics are normally used at these points, no harm will be done to the make-up. The lady then may take on or off her dress or blouse over the face guard without harming the make-up or the garment.

As stated hitherto, if desired the entire face guard may be knitted or woven, or otherwise fabricated in a single, substantially hemi-spherical portion of substantially the configuration of the wearers face 42.

I have found a satisfactory size to be substantially 11 inches long from top to bottom and 6 1; inches wide, with an elastic 10 inches long in attached expanded condition at the top to contract to 6 inches in length to gather the guard to fit the forehead snugly, the bottom of the face guard is shaped to lie underneath the wearers chin by a 5 inch elastic in attached expanded condition to contract to gather the guard to 3 inches to fit snugly underneath the chin. The tucks 20 comprises two 4; inch tucks making the guard fit the sides of the face snugly, yet not too tightly to disturb the make-up.

It is apparent that I have provided a novel type of face guard with the advantages explained above.

It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

l. A face guard, comprising two substantially hemi-circular portions of transparent fabric, each of substantialy one-half the size and configuration of a wearers face, having hems therein adjacent the upper portions of the diametric edges thereof and shaping tucks therein centrally of said diametric edges and having cut away substantially segmental portions at the lower ends thereof, providing lower edges having hems therein, secured together along their curved edges, aligning said hem portions to form tubes and expansible elastic means inserted within each of said tubular-hems and having the ends thereof secured to said portions adjacent the ends of said aligned tubular hems in expanded condition to freely contract and gather said tubular hems around said elastic means, whereby said elastic means may freely expand within said gathered hems for insertion of the upper portion of said guard over the top of a wearers forehead and the lower portion underneath a wearers chin and contract to yieldingly retain said face guard over the wearers face.

2. A face guard, comprising a substantially hemi-spherical member of transparent fabric of substantially the size and configuration of a wearers face having shaping tucks therein centrally of each side of the peripheral edges thereof and having a cut-away, substantially segmental portion at the lower end thereof providing a lower edge, and expansible elastic means extending along the upper portion of the peripheral edge thereof and along said lower edge having the ends thereof secured to said guard in expanded condition to freely contract and gather said guard under said elastic means, whereby said elastic means may freely expand above said gathered portions for insertion of the upper portion of said guard over the top portion of a wearers forehead and the lower portion underneath a wearers chin and contract to yieldingly retain said'face guard over a wearers face.

3. A face guard, comprising a substantially hemi-spherical member of transparent fabric of substantially the size and configuration of a wearers face having a cut-away, substantially segmental portion at the lower end thereof providing a lower edge and expansible elastic means extending along the upper portion of the peripheral edge thereof and along said lower edge having the ends thereof secured to said guard in expanded condition to freely contract and gather said guard under said elastic means, whereby said elastic means may freely expand above said gathered portions for insertion of the upper portion of said guard over the top portion of a wearers forehead and the lower portion underneath a wearers chin and contract to yieldingly retain said face guard over a wearers face.
