Description

Jan. 23, 1940. DENYZER 2,188,036
CLEVIS Filed Jan. 18. 1959 In ventor HERBERT B. DE/vzER,
Attorneys Patented Jan. 23, 1940 f CLEVIS Herbert B. Denzer, North Freedom,- Wis. Application January 18, 1939, Serial No. 251,639 1 Claim. (01. 294-85) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clevises and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction and arrangement whereby said device may be expeditiously mounted on a rafter of the roof of a barn or other building.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a clevis of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact and which'may bemanufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification,
taken in connection with-the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a clevis constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a View in front elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a rear elevational view. i Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of complemental, angular rods I and 2 of any suitable metal. Of course, the rods l and 2 may also be of any desired length and diameter.
The arm 3 on the upper end of the rod 2 terminates in a downwardly offset end portionor extension 4. Thus, what may be referred to; as a pocket 5 is provided in which a rafter (not shown) is engageable.
At its upper end, the rod l terminates in an integral eye 6 for the reception of the extension 4. The arm 1 on thelower end of the rod I is slidably engageable in an eye 8 which is provided therefor on the lower end of the rod 2. The projecting free end portion of the arm I is apertured, as at 9, to receive a removable cotter pin I0 which retains said arm in the eye 8,
It is'thought that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration'of the foregoing. To mount the device on a rafter, the rods l and 2 are separated. The arm 3 of the rod 2 is then passed over or 5 across the rafter from one side thereof and is brought to rest thereon with the downwardly oifset extension 4 projecting beyond the other side thereof. .The eye 6 is then slipped on the extension 4 and the free end portion ofthe arm 10 1 is engaged in the eye 8, after which the cotterpin I0 is inserted. It will thus be seen that a means has been provided whereby different devices, such as a hay rope pulley, a block and tackle, etc., may be conveniently suspended from any desired point beneath the roof. Of course, the clevis may be used for any purpose for which it may be found adapted other than on a roof rafter. It is believed that the many advantages of a clevis constructed in accordance with the present 0 invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed. 1
What is claimed is: l A clevis adapted to be removably mounted on a rafter, said clevis including a vertical rod, an
integral arm extending horizontally from the upper end of said rod and engageable over the rafter, said arm including a portion extending downwardly at an abrupt angle and terminating in a horizontal extension, the downwardly ex.- tending portion being engageable with the side 35 of the rafter, an eye on the other end of the rod, another rod comprising an eye on one end adapted to be slipped on the extension, an arm HERBERT 13.
