IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,728, dated August 19, 1879; application filed July 2, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM H. GARLooK, of Denison, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented a new and valu able Improvement in Slide-Door Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of a car, showing my fastener applied; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in fasteners for sliding doors particularly adapted to railway-cars.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the side of a car having the opening a, through which access is had to its interior, and which is closed by a sliding door, B, in the usual way. This door is hung in any known way.
0 indicates a strong metallic plate bolted or screwed to the side of the car just below the door, to which is secured by means of a flatheaded bolt, 1), a wedge-key, 0, having cut in its length a slot, 8, parallel to one of the sides of the key, and consequently forming an angle with the otherthat is, with the side designed to bear against the edge of the sliding door.
The wedge-key is of the general form of a triangle, having its apex rounded off, as shown at c. The slot 8, formedin this Wedge-key, (it being premised that the pivot-bolt b is below the lower edge of the door,) extends sufiiciently near the rounded extremity c to allow the said key to be swung into the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, when the highest point of the rounded part 0 will be below the lower edge of the door, so that the latter will readily slide past it; but when this key is thrown up with its small end down, and is forcibly depressed, it jams the door against the stop 19 on the side of the car, against which the door abuts and holds the latter in place, the tendency of the key being to increase its jamming action asthe car proceeds on its way.
The key is guided when it is forced down by a guide-stud, d, on the plate 0, the said stud being on a line with the edge of the door or slightly inside of the same, and its eflect being to hold the said key against vibration toward said stud, or rather in its direction, the result of which would be to release the door. Attached to this stud or to plate O,or to any other fixed part of the car side or body, is a chain, L, having on its free end a hook, It, designed to be engaged with a staple, t, on the wedge-key, the object of which chain is to prevent the said key from getting out of position casually.
In lieu of the hook I may substitute a hasp, that, being passed over the staple. 1', will serve in the usual way for the application of a padlock and seal; but the seal-wire may be passed through the staple and a link of the chain without the employment of a padlock.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fastening for transversely-sliding doors, consisting of the combination, with the rear edge of the door and the bolt 12, and stud 61 below the lower edge of said door, of the slotted endWise-movable rotating wedge-plate 0, adapted when turned in one direction on the bolt to engage the door edge and stud, and when turned in the other to swing below the lower edge of the door, so that thelatter can pass above it freely, substantially as specified.
