Description

J.- H. OGONNOR. Sprinkler.
No. 218,560. Patented Aug. 12,1879.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
N PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. OOONNOR, OF HELENA, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINKLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,560, dated August 12, 1879; application filed March 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. OOoNNoR, of Helena, in the county of Phillips and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Sprinkler, of which the following is a specification.
The figure is a side view of my improved sprinkler, partly in section, to show the construction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for sprinkling water or other liquid in a fine spray upon clothes, plants, tobacco, leaves, and for various other purposes where the liquid is required to be delivered in a fine spray, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient and reliable in use.
The invention consists in an improved sprinkler formed of the cup, the handle, the convex perforated plate or rose, and the valve, substantially as herein shown and described.
A represents a goblet-shaped cup made of sheet-brass or other suitable sheet metal. To
the base of the cupA is attached, or upon it is formed, a socket, B, to receive ahandle, O, which may be made of wood or other suitable material. The mouth of the cup A is closed by a convex plate or rose,.D, which is secured to the said cup air-tigh t-, and which is perforated with numerous holes, so fine that Water or other liquid will be retained in the cup by atmospheric pressure. In the side of the cup A, near the handle-socket B, is formed a hole to serve as a vent to allow the air to escape when filling the said cup with liquid. The vent-hole of the cup A is closed with a thumb-valve, E, as shown in the figure.
The cup A is filled by immersing it in the liquid, and at the same time opening the valve E to allow the air to escape as the liquid passes in. When the cup A is filled, the valve E is closed, and the liquid will be retained by atmospheric pressure, and may be discharged in a fine. spray by the movement of the hand.
If desired, the rose D may be made detachable, and provided with a flange fitting closely into the mouth of the cup A, and secured in place by a bayonet-catch.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved sprinkler formed of the cup A, the handle 0, the convex perforated plate or rose D, and the valve E, substantially as herein shown and described.
JAS. H. OOONNOR.
