HAT
Filed Sept. 21. 1958 )6 1 INVENTOR.
I 99 5 BY A ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 2, 1940 UNlTED STATES PATENT --oF icE HAT Murray J. Marks, New York, N. Y. Application September 21, 1938, Serial No. 230,931
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in hats, being particularly directed to open crown ladies hats incorporating adjustment elements.
Broad1y,'it is an object of this invention to provide, in a ladies hat, an open crown and/or open brim construction, wherein the free ends defining the same are interconnected and interlocked for a series of side adjustments, whereby such hat may be adaptable for several sizes or different types of coiffures.
Specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a ladies hat of an open crown and/or open brim construction, the free ends of which are provided with bands adapted to pass one through the other, each of such bands having slit formations and a series of fastening elements associated therewith, so as to adjustably connect the same to provide for a different circumferen-' tial dimension of the crown, to accommodate either different sizes of heads or different coiffures on the same head.
These and other advantages, capabilities and features of the invention will appear from the lsubjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a ladys hat in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the same.
Figure 3 is a rear view with the bands of the hat in the process of looking or separation.
Referring to the reference characters in the drawing, one embodiment of the hat comprises of an arcuate brim segment l0, and arcuate crown segments H and If. The respective segments have slightly different linear curvatures, so that upon stitching of the same along such linear edges as at It and i l, a cupped effect is produced, to provide for the disposition of the hat on the head of the wearer, in the manner indicated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing. Along the end of the linear curvature edge of segment II and across the extremities of crown segment 12 there are attached opposing bands l5 and [6 of dicreasing width and serving to provide a circumferential continuation of the crown of the hat. One of the bands it has a vertical slit ll formed substantially centrally thereof, through which is adapted to pass the free end of the other band l6. 1
Each of the bands has mounted in spaced relationship adjacent the attached end thereof a series of male fastening members I8, indicated in the preferred embodiment as a series of buttons and at the other end thereof female fastening members, indicated in the preferred modification as horizontal slits or button holes. The bands are adjustably positioned with respect to one another in the'manner shown respectively in Fig- 5 ures 3 and 2. I
Although-in the embodiment illustrated, both the crown and brim are indicated as having open construction, it is within the province of this invention to provide for an open brim and closed 10 or substantially closed crown construction, so long as there is associated with either of or both the crown and brim, an adjustable connecting band assembly of the character shown in the drawing. Further, although the fastening elements indicated in the preferred embodiment are illustrated as spaced buttons and associated button holes, to provide for adjusting the circumference of the hat, it is within the province of this invention to provide other fastening media on the opposing bands, as, for example, spaced snaps, hooks and eyes, the cooperating male and female members of which are disposed in the same relationship as the fastening means disclosed in the preferred embodiment.
It is obvious that various changesand modifications may' be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
In a ladies hat structure incorporating an open crown and brim, a series of arcuate segments attached to one another along their longitudinal edges to define crown and brim members, the ends of the arcuate segments forming the crown and brim being spaced apart to form an open crown and brim, a pair of bands, each attached at one end thereof respectively to one of the opposing ends of the arcuate segments forming 40 the crown, each of the bands having a series of spaced male locking members adjacent the attached end, and spaced female locking members adjacent the free end thereof, one of the bands having a slit intermediate the male and female looking member series thereof, through which passes the free end of the other band, whereby to provide a hat adjustable as to crown circumference upon interlocking of different sets of cooperating male and female locking members on the respective bands.
