Description
Nov. 28, 1939. A. D. KANER ASH-RECEPTACLE COMPACT Filed Jan. 28, 1938 I NVENTOR ABRAHAM -D. KANER BY 7/ AT RNEY Patented Nov. .28, 1939 uN-rrao STATES PATIENT OFFICE j 2,181,215 asn-nacar'racm .CO'MPACT Abraham Kaner, Application January 28,
2 Claims. (01. 131-242) This invention relates to improvements in ash receptacles, for disposing of the ashes from cigarettes and the like, and fragments of the cigarettes themselves, and more specifically to a receptacle 5 which may be carried conveniently on the person, as in a pocket or purse, or even in the hand, and which will be substantially in the form and shape of a compact or the like so as to be neither unsightly nor burdensome.
m The invention has among its objects the production of an ash-receptacle compact of the kind described, which will be extremely neat and attractive in appearance, simple in construction,
small enough .to be conveniently retained in a pocket or a purse while not in use and easily held in the hand while in use, andwhich will be otherwise satisfactory and efficient for use wherever deemed applicable.
' One of the objects of my invention is to so construct said device that it will not only receive and hold the ashes, but will also support the cigarette from time to time when the latter is not actually being held nor being smoked, but is merely placed aside for a short interval in the usual manner.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the kind described, having the cigarette holder thereon, and in which said holder is especially constructed as to be movable into the ash compartment itself when the compact is closed,
80 and said holder being so positioned that when a lighted cigarette is placed thereon, the ashes will tend to fall into the ash compartment of the device.
A further object of my invention is to so constructthe cigarette holder that it will cooperate ,with the opening and closing movement of the compact itself, and wherein the holder will auto-' matically move to cigarette-holding position when the compact is opened, and will be moved'to inop- 40 erative or folded position within the compact when the compact isclosed.
Many other objectsand advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, from the disclosures herein given. c
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and the uses mentioned, as will be more clearly pointed out in the'claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the views,
Webster Groves, Mo.

Figure l is a perspective view of the device in normal operative position;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view through the same, showing several stages of closure movement; and
. Figure 3 is a perspective view of a detail of construction showing the'holder and spring support therefor.
Referring, more particularly to the drawing, wherein I have illustrated a preferred embodi- 1o ment of my invention, there is shown a receptacle in the general form, shape and size, of the wellknowncompacts generally carried by women, or
a to small cases of various sorts carried by men.
In the form shown the receptacle consists of a 5 base or container portion or part I, and a cover 2 preferably hinged thereto, the well or ash-receiving and holding opening being indicated at 3.
The part i may be provided with a flange 4 extending downwardly from the top edge of said 20 part, and thence projecting radially inwardly either entirely about the lower periphery of said flange as at 5, or at only a limited portion of said periphery, so as to provide a securement for the lowermost end of the cigarette-holdersupport as 5 will be presently described.
Obviously, the device as thus far set forth will be useful for receiving and retaining portions of ashes and fragments of cigarettes therein, being held in the hand while smoking, or placed on any 0 near-by supporting surface, such as a table, chair, mantle, etc., as found most convenient, and hence will be ready for the use to which it is adapted.
If desired, the compact may be lined or interlined with some heat-insulation such as asbestos 6, 35 and the compact may be made of any desired material and ornamented in any manner, thus preserving its neatness and beauty without destroying any of its utility.
However, in order to increase its utility, I have 40 provided a cigarette-holder or rest 1, of such length that it may be readily received within the opening 3, so that the cigarette may be placed on said holder from time to time in the usual manner. In order that there will be no tendency for the 45 ashes from the cigarette on the holder 1 to drop beyond the ash-rec'eptacle,I prefer to position said holder so that it lies substantially in a plane at a slight angle to the horizontal plane, the cigarette being indicated at 8 thereon. The holder may be 5c in the form of a trough in transverse cross-section.
, Although the holder may be mounted so as to be moved manually into operative position for supporting the cigarette thereon, I have found it 5:
preferable to so construct its mounting that the opening movement of the cover oi the compact able within the receptacle.
A length or spring wire may be formed into the pair or legs 9-9, there being a bight 10 provided intermediate the ends 01' said length of wire, the
fixed to some portion 01' the part I, as for example to the radially extending projection 5, and the main part of said spring wire support is deflected set'is to position the bight end of the support at a lower elevation than the coils l-l5, and whereby the holder 1 will lie in a plane to corresame by gravity alone.
The holder and support thus constructed will automatically be shifted to normal operative posaid figure.
The cover latches shut at the termination of closure movement, and as soon as this latch is released, the cover may be sition, and the coil springs il-Il and i5 l5 normal position.
The ashes may be emptied from time to time, and the interior of the compact cleaned out by wiping, washing or the like.
