IMPROVEMENT IN IRON ROOFING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,085, dated July 29, 1879; application filed April 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRIFFITH B. THOMAS, of Point Pleasant, in the county of Mason and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Iron Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to secure the sheets of iron forming the roof in place without the use of nails, rivets, or any similar device.
It consists in forming the joints between the sheets by crimping the edge of one over the turned up edge of the adjoining sheet the whole length, and then fastening them by clips of tin in a manner that will be fully set forth farther on.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a section of the roof, showing the manner of forming the joint and applying the clips. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a roof constructed according to my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
Referring to the drawings, A A A are the sheets of metal forming the root. In applying these, the edge a of one is turned up at a rightangle. The edge of the adjoining sheet is likewise turned up at a right angle, and then turned over again, forming a cap, I), the whole length of the sheet, as clearly shown in Fig.2.
One edge of each sheet is thus formed into a cap, while the opposite edge is turned up to receive the cap of the adjoining sheet, as shown, and at the peak the sheets are joined in the same manner as in Fig. 1.
The joints are fastened by clips B, applied 11 the following manner: The end of the clip is fastened to the sheathing under the sheet, that has a cap, 1), formed on its edge. Thus, in Fig. 1 the end 0 of the clip is fastened to the sheathing with a nail. The clip is then bent up against the face of the upturned edge a, and then carried over and downward. The cap 11 is then placed over the clip and edge a, and the free end at of the clip turned up under the edge of the cap, and then carried over the cap, and the end bent down against the side thereof, as clearly indicated in the drawings, the free end of the clip being designated by the letter d. I
In this way the edges of the sheets are socurely fastened together, so that there is no danger of their separating or of the capslifting from the upturned edges of the sheets. After the sheets are placed on and fastened in this way, the joints between the caps 11 and edges to may be tightened by the tongsin the usual manner.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with edge a and cap 1), formed by the extended edge of the sheet A, the clips B, one end fastened to the sheathing under the sheet, having cap I), While the otheris carried under and over the outside of the cap to fasten it to the edge a, and thus firmly secure the two together in the manner substantially as described.
GRIFFITH B. THOMAS.
