Description
I A. W. DEOROW. SecuringMetallio Gutter-Hinges.
No. 217,002. Patented J'u|y1,1879m MPEYERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANSON W. DEGROW, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN.SECURI NG METALLIC GUTTER-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,002, dated July 1', 1879; application filed May 3, 1879. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANsoN WALTER DE- CROW, of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Metallic Gutter-Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows a plan, Fig. 2 a section, of a gutter with my improvement thereon.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of improved devices for securing metal linings to the wooden gutters of buildings, and is a perfect security against the breaking of the metal from expansion and contraction.
It will be best understood byreference to the accompanying drawings, in which a shows the gutter and b the roof. At convenient intervals along the inside of the outer edge of the gutter, and projecting beyond it, are secured straps o, and upon the top of the outside edge, and extending over it, is fastened a strip of metal, d. This extends the whole length of the gutter. At 0 is the metal lining, long enough to extend the entire length of the gutter to be lined, and formed by riveting strips of in etal together and bending them into proper form to fit the gutter, after which it is put in place and its outer edge turned or bent over the edge of the strip d, as shown in Fig. 2.
The projecting ends of the straps c are then bent up and over, holding the front edge of the lining firmly to the strip d, which strip, as before stated, is firmly secured to the wood of the gutter.
The upper edge of the linin g. which extends up upon the roof, is provided at intervals with straps f, secured to the lining by a single rivet, which also serves as a pivot, and extending beyond its edge. A nail, g, through this extension fastens both strip and attached lining to the roof. This portion of my device is applicable to securing the upper edges of metal gutters as well as linings.
An air-space, h, is left between the gutter and lining, and the guttermay also be perforated, if desired, for ventilation.
An examination of the devices employed by me shows clearly that the expansion and contraction of the metal is unobstructed, no part of it being directly attached to the roof.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a gutter, a, and metal lining e, the straps c and strips d, secured to the edge of said gutter, and operating, as described, to hold in place the front edge of the lining, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of May, 1879.
ANSON WALTER DEOROVV.
