Description

0d. 31, 193%. v, PQMPILIQ 2,178,024
THUMB TACK Filed Oct. 20. 1938 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 31, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to an improvement in thumb tacks, and more particularly to a thumb tack which is to be used as an advertising medium.
,The object of the invention is to provide a thumb tack which is inexpensiveto manufacture, durable in structure, and can be assembled with great ease and celerity.
Another object of the invention is to provide a thumb tack, having its head surface made of a suitable material whereby printed matter can be stamped thereon.
Another object is to provide a thumb tack which is made up of two elements only, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture and assembly to a minimum. Other objects will be obvious as. brought out in the following specifications:
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a front elevation or face view of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure'l looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure 3, but showing the base plate partly in place.
Figure 5 is a side view of Figure 1, showing the thumb tack fixed to 'a wall or the like, and
Figure 6 is a similar view to Figure 5 only showing a modified form of thumb tack.
Referring to the drawing, wherein I have shown by way of illustration merely, a thumb tack assembly, generally referred to by the numeral III. The thumb tack I consists of a disk shaped head or body portion II and a base plate I2 having a barb I3 punched out as shown at I4, Figure 2. The base plate I2 is made of resilient material so that it may be capable of being bowed for insertion in bead II-. This base plate i2 is slightly'bent at each end as shown at I and i6, for the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The disk shaped head or body portion II is bent down around its periphery to form .an annular bead H, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. In assembling the thumb tack Ill the base plate I2, which is made of any suitable spring or resilient material, is placed diametrically in the rear of the disk shaped head II and then sprung or arched into a position as shown in Figure 4, so that the ends I5 and I6 of the base plate I2 can easily pass under the rim I8 of the bead Il. The base plate I2 then' is bowed and sprung into the position shown and allows the head to be easily rotated into proper reading position after the tack is in- 5.
serted into a wall or the like. 1
Figure 6 illustrates a modified form of the present invention wherein the disk shaped head or body portion I I is convexed on the outside. This structure tends to strengthen the head or body 10 portion when the tack is inserted into a wall or the like, and prevents denting the head with the thumb.
It will be seen from the description that the tack is very desirable as an advertising medium. The tradesmen can give them away free to the consumer to tack 'in the wall adjacent to their telephone as a reminder, and to get the telephone number quickly.
The present invention can also be used as a price marker. The tack can be inserted into the edge of a shelf holding merchandise, with the price of the merchandise printed on the head of the tack.
fications of this invention can be made without departing from-the principles thereof. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a disk shaped head or body portion having its peripheral edge bent back upon itself to form a bead, a rectangular resilient base plate slidably mounted within said bead, and abarb integral with said base plate and bent at right angles thereto.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a disk Shaped head or body portionhaving its peripheral edge bent backupon itself to form a bead, a reslient rectangular base plate having its ends diamertically mounted within said bead to permit-the rotation of said base plate in respect to said'head or body portion, and a barb stamped out of said base plate and integral therewith.
