Claims.

This invention relates to powder puffs, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will be of the powdercontaining type, so that during use the powder will be evenly and smoothly applied to the skin without undue irritation thereto and which will be self-closing as soon as removed from use to prevent waste of the powder and permit the carrying of the device without danger of spoiling other articles by powder coming in contact therewith.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating one of the faces of the powder puff.

Figure 2 is a sectional view illustrating the interior construction of the puff.

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modification of the invention.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the body of the powder puff including a backing panel 6 having a marginal flange l coacting with the backing panel in forming a chamber for the reception of powder. The backing panel and flange I are constructed integrally and of any material suitable for the purpose and may be of a flexible nature and suitable stiffness is provided thereto to maintain the puff in proper shape by a reinforcement 8 consisting of a plurality of radially extending ribs 9 radiating from a common center portion Ill. The reinforcement 8 is secured on the backing panel and the marginal flange in any well known manner. Each of the radially extending ribs is arcuately curved from end to end. Secured on the backing panel 6 and extending inwardly from the marginal flange l and arranged between the ribs 9 are short arcuately curved ribs II. The ribs of the reinforcement 8 as well as the ribs II are constructed of cushion material, such as a soft grade of rubber. The ribs 9 and I0 act as supports for a powder applying strip l2 and said strip may be secured on said ribs so as to be maintained in proper position. The strip of material I2 is constructed from a soft spongy rubber and is arranged in coiled formation, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The runs of the coil lie in close contact with each other so as to close the powder chamber. However, during the use of the puff the runs of the coil where unsupported by the ribs may separate sufficiently to permit escape of a limited amount of powder from the powder I chamber suflicient for powdering the skin. In use, the puff is moved over the skin in a circular motion which brings about a limited separation of the runs of the coiled strip allowing a limited amount of powder to work therebetween onto 10 the skin for application thereto smoothly and free of irritation to the skin.

The runs of the coiled strip immediately move in contact with each other on the discontinuance of use of the device to prevent the powder from working out of the powder chamber between the runs of the coiled strip. The coiled strip [2 being constructed of spongy rubber or some other suitable material will be non-irritating and will permit an even and smooth distribution of powder onto the skin.

As shown in Figure 4 the strip [2 may have secured to the runs thereof lambs wool or other similar material indicated by the character M in order to give additional smoothness and softness to the device.

It is believed that the simplicity and advantages of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which such a device relates, and while I have herein set forth a satisfactory embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of my claims may be resorted to when desired.

Having described the invention what I claim is:

1. A powder puff comprising a flexible powder container having one side thereof open, reinforcement for said container and providing spaced ports, and a powder applying strip arranged in coiled formation on the reinforcement and forming a powder applicator and adapted to permit escape of a limited amount of powder onto the skin when moved thereover and acting to prevent waste of powder during nonuse.

2. A powder puff comprising a flexible container having one side thereof open, a reinforcement mounted in said container to provide a supporting medium, and a spirally wound applicator strip of cushion material mounted on the supporting medium and acting as a closure for the open side of the container and capable of a limited separation to permit escape of a limited amount of powder during the movement of the applicator strip over the skin.

A powder puff comprising a flexible container for powder, a reinforcement mounted in said container and including a plurality of radially extending ribs extending from a common center and providing spaced supports, a spirally wound cushion strip mounted on said ribs and forming a closure for the powder container capable of a limited separation to permit a limited amount of powder to pass from the container onto the skin during the movement of the applicator strip over the skin in a circular motion.

A powder puff comprising a flexible container for powder, a reinforcement mounted in said container and including a plurality of radially extending ribs extending from a common center and providing spaced supports, a spirally wound cushion strip mounted on said ribs and forming a closure for the powder container capable of a limited separation to permit a limited.

5. A powder puff comprising a flexible container for powder, a reinforcement mounted in said container and including a plurality of radially extending ribs extending from a common center and providing spaced supports, a spirally Wound cushion strip mounted on said ribs and forming a closure for the powder container capable of a limited separation to permit a limited amount of powder to pass from the container onto the skin during the movement of the cushion strip over the skin in a circular path, a plurality of arouately curved ribs shorter in length than the firstnamed ribs and arranged therebetween Within the container to provide additional support for the spirally wound strip, and soft fibrous mate- 7 rial sewed onto the runs of the spirally wound cushion strip to provide softness thereto.
