UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER J. ROWLEY AND JOHN G. ALBRIGHT, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Q SHAVING-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov, 21, 1911.
Application filed March 14, 1911. Serial No. 614,411.
Side, Pittsburgh, in the county of Alle-- gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' in Shaving-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relatesto shaving brushes and the objects of the invention are to rovide a brush with an adjustable and yieldable shield for preventing lather, soap and water from getting on the hand when the brush is being used, and to furnish a brush with a shield that can be shifted into engag'ement with the bristles of a brush to prevent the bristles from spreading when drying and to confine the bristles to provide a pointed end on the brush as is desired when We attain the above objects by a mechani-' cal construction that will be hereinafter speknown type common to shaving brushes.
The body 1 adjacent to the handle 2 is provided with an annular groove 4. i
The shield comprises a frusto-conical shaped yieldable shell 5 preferably made of rub er. The lower edges of the shell 5 are reinforced or provided with a rim 6 and the upper edges thereof are'provided with. an
- inwardly projecting-flange 7 adapted to engage in the groove 4.
When the shield is shifted from the body tothe bristles 3 it is frictionally held by said bristles. With the shield upon the body 1 an annular compartment 9 is formed around the body 1 and this compartment receives any lather or water that is forced passing. onto the hand of the user.
rearwardlyupon the body 1 and theshield prevents the lather or water from contacting with the hand.
Owing to the fact that the material of which the shield or attachment is formed is relatively thin in cross-section and yieldable or flexible, it will be understood that the annular flange 7 is expanded for the purpose of inserting the attachment on the brush with the flange within the groove,-
and that, when moved down onto the bristles of the brush, the outer periphery of the attachment may be grasped along its rear portion to cause the flange to provide a pressure on the bristles to permit the shield or attachment to act toremove the lather which, owing to the fact that the pocket which is formed in advanceof said flange. and which is open to the bristles at all points in advance. of the flange, will be retained within said pocket and prevent its The fact that the pocket is open to the bristles and that the part which acts on the bristles Y is located at the rear or bottom of the pocket, insures the elimination of any liability of splashing of the lather ormaterial carried by the bristles as the shield passes thereover.
One embodiment of the invention has been described and we reserve the right to make such changes as ,fallwithinthe scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is i A removable attachment for shaving brushes, comprising an annulus formed of relatively thin flexible material and frustoconical .in form, said annulus having its end of larger diameter peripherally reinforced- 'eter extending over, but exerting no material pressure on the bristles of the brush.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
