IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING ROCKING-CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,475., dated July 15, 1875); application filed March 13, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE O. PAINE, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Folding Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

To the side posts of the back-frame A, at a suitable point above the seat, are pivoted the upper ends of the arm-pieces D, which arm-pieces extend below the seat, and at'their lower ends are pivoted to the forward ends of the rockers E, thus forming the front legs of the chair.-

The side posts of the back-frame A extend below the seat, and at a suitable point are pivoted to the rear leg-pieces, F, which extend to the rear, and at their lower ends are pivoted to the rear ends of the rockers E.

The side bars of the seat-frame B are pivoted to the upper ends of the rear legs, which extend above the point where they are pivoted to the back-frame A. I

At a suitable point near the center of the side pieces of the seat-frame B are pivoted links or straps a, which extend forward, and at their opposite ends are pivoted to the forward legs, D.

The links a may be secured to a transverse stretcher placed in the front legs, beneath the front edge of the seat, (as the chair is set up for use, the stretcher at the same time affording a support for the front edge of the seat,) or may be secured to the front legs by any other suitable means. i

The links a, where they are secured to the seat-frame B, are arranged so that the pivots upon which they move pass below the center of the pivots which connect them to the front legs as the chair is set up for use.

The seat proper, made of canvas, carpeting,

or other suitable material of a flexible character, is secured to the front edge, a, of the may terminate at the point where they are pivoted to the rear legs.

Thus constructed, by raising the forward edge of the seat the chair is readily folded, and in consequence of the seat-frame being pivoted to the upper ends of the rear legs, as described, together with the toggle-joint action of the links a, the flexible seat is drawn very taut when the chair is set up for use; and in consequence of the connections of the links a, together with the fact of the pivots passing below the center, as described, the chair is prevented from collapsing.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a folding rocking-chair in which the back-frame extends below the seat, and is there pivoted to the rear legs, and the upper ends of said rear legs extend above the point at which they are pivoted to the back, a seatframe adapted, in connection with a stretcher placed in the back-frame, to receive a flexible seat-covering, as described, the side bars of which seat-frame are pivoted to the upper ,ends of the rear legs, and also connected to the front legs by links, as and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.

2. In a folding chair in which the rear legs are pivoted to the back-frame and extend above the point at which they are pivoted to said back, in the manner described, and provided with a seat-frame constructed substantially as shown, in combination with said seat-frame, said seat-frame being pivoted to the upper ends of said rear legs, the links a, connecting said seat-frame with the front legs, said links being pivoted to the seat-frame, so that their pivotal points on the seat-frame come slightly below or past the center of the points where they are pivoted to the front legs, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
