Description

'L. G. BRADY. Gate.
No. 217.260. Patented July-8,187.9.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, LEVI O. BRADY, ()F HOMER CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,260, dated July 8, 1879; application filed J annary 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, L. O. BRADY, of Homer City, in the county of Indiana and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section; and Fig.2 is a view showingin detail the construction of the latch.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to gates; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Arepresents the gate-post, which is set at an inclination from a vertical line, and connected by a cross-piece, B, with a post, 0, inclined in an opposite direction, said post 0 and top or cross piece B serving to brace the postA. The latter may also serve as the end post of the fence.
The post A is provided, near its lower end, with a pin, a, bent at b, so as to form a pivot for the gate D, which is provided with a hole or opening, 0, fitting over said' bent portion 1). Near its upper end the gate-postAhas a bracket, d, provided with an eye, 0, for a pin, f, which passes through said eye and forms the second pivot for the gate, which is provided with a hole or opening, g, for the reception of said pin. This method of hinging the gate enables it to be opened very wide in either direction, and to be easily removed, when desired.
The gate D may be of any suitable construction, its one side being slanting, as at E, to enable it to be hinged to the inclined post.
. By reason of this construction it will, when opened, not remain so, but will close automatically by its own weight.
The gate is provided with a sliding latch arm, F, having two studs, GH. Ahand-lever, I, pivoted above the latch-arm, bears with its lower end against the outer side of stud G, and a spring, J, suitably arranged, presses upon the inside of stud H, thus forcing the latch-arm in an outward direction. The post K, at the end of the gate, is provided with a bracket, L, to the outer ends of which are pivoted two triangular latches, l l, the inner ends of which are a sufficient distance apart to ad- Init the end of the latch-arm F, and are supported upon a ledge, m.
When thegateswingsto, the endof the latch arm will enter under the end of the nearest latch l, raise it, and proceed until stopped by the other latch Z. down by its own weight and secure the gate.
To open the gate, operate the hand-lever I, which presses against the stud G in a direction opposite to the tension of spring J, thus tending to withdraw the latch-arm from between the latches l l, and thus open the gate.
It will be observed that my improved gate' will open or closein either direction, and that its construction is simple, cheap, and durable. Having thus described my invention, lclann and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the inclined post A, having bent pin or pintle a and bracket d, provided with a removable pin, f, with the gate D, having holes or openings 0 g, as set forth.
2; The posts A 0, set at an angle to and diverging from each other, as shown, in combination with the brace B, connecting said posts, and the gate D, hinged to post A, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEVI CLOVER BRADY. Witnesses:
J. K. PIERCE, WILLIAM W. BRADY.
