Description
W. H. McCURMICK.
Combined Gate-Hinge and Closing-Rod. N0.l68,040. Patent edSept.21,1875'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM E. McooEMIoK, OF MUNoIE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR To HIMSELF AND GEORGE w. SEITZ, 0E sAME PLAoE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED GATE-HINGES AND CLOSING-RODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,040, dated September 21, 1875; application filed August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. H. MCCORMICK, of Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates aud'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a gate-hinge, formed of a vertical rod, a doublearmed staple and strap, having curved end, in combination with an elevating and closing rod, one end of which is attached to the gate and the other having its bearing in the arm or staple, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which the figure is a front elevation of a gate embodying my invention. I
A and B represent the gate-posts, and O the gate, constructed in any suitable manner. The top hinge is formed of an elongated staple, D, the upper arm of which is out with screw-threads, so as to screw into the post A, thereby adding strength to the same, and the lower arm is fastened by a wood-screw. The
' lower hinge is formed of two pieces, E and G,
the former being an upright rod, fastened at its lower end to the post, and extending upward on a line with the staple D. The part Gr is fastened to the post farther from the gate, and has an arm which slips over the upper end of the rod E, holding the same firmly, and it has a forward-projecting arm, which acts as a bearing for the lower end of the elevating and closing rod H, said rod being held to the hinge by a nut on its lower end, and the upper end fastened to the gate. The straps II, or parts of hinges attached to the gate, are curved at the ends placed on the staple D and rod E, in order to prevent the gate from striking the same. By lifting the rod H out of its bottom bearing, the part G may be lifted off the rod E, and both parts E and G may be screwed out or in as desired, to throw the bottom of the gate farther from the bottom of the post, in case the bottom does not sit plumb, and will also hold the gate open when thrown back to the fence. The hinges may be used either on the right or left side. The rod H acts as a brace to the gate, and the gate rests thereon, and when being thrown open the gate slides upward clear of the ground, and it closes readily and gently, thus obviating the clashing which is so objectionable in gates that close by means of springs. Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The gate-hinge herein described, consisting of the rod E, double-armed staple G, and
strap I, having curved end, in combination with the elevating and closing rod H, having one end attached to the gate, and the other having its bearing in the arm G, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. ORR, I G. W. SEITZ.
