My invention relates to improvements in shears and scissors and more particularly to means for automatically adjusting the amount of tension upon the blades.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide means incorporated within a pair of shears or the like for maintaining the blades firmly contacted at all times.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pair of shears having means of the above described character so constructed and arran whereby the same may be readily adjusted to vary the tension between the blades.
A further important object of my invention is to provide means for varying the tension between the blades and which means is so constructed and arranged to eliminate all protruding parts and thereby present a smooth and neat appearance to the shears and prevent engagement or catching in the article being cut.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a pair of shears constructed with means of the above described character which is efficient in operation, durable in use, simple in adjustment and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of shears constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, the blades being closed.
Figures 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views taken on the lines 3-3 and 4--4 of Figure 2 respectively.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the blades on an enlarged scale.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the spring or tensioning element.
In one of the preferred embodiments of my invention, I provide a pair of shears equipped with upper and lower blades ll and I2 respectively. The blades are pivoted together by means of a pivot pin 9 extending through registering openings lla and l2a in the upper and lower blades respectively, said pin having a head fitting within a seat of the blade l2 and flush with the outer face thereof. The upper blade ll is fashioned with a threaded opening llb spaced from the opening He and said opening llb extends from the outer face of said upper blade towards the inner face thereof and has threaded therein an djusting screw 8, the inner end of which is adapted to be maintained spaced from the inner end of the opening I lb for a purpose hereinafter described.
The upper blade II is fashioned with a longitudinally extending slot l0 effecting communication between the opening lla and the opening l lb. Said slot is fashioned with side and bottom. walls llla and Nb respectively. Positioned within the slot l is an elongated leaf spring I, one end of which is seated within a slot 9a formed in the pivot pin 9 and the opposite end underlying and engaging the lower face of the adjusting screw 8. Intermediate of the length thereof the spring 1 is fashioned with an offset section "la engaging the bottom wall lllb of the slot l0. Said offset section la coacts with the end of the spring engaging the screw 8 to exert tension on the pivot pin 9 through the medium of the end 0f the spring within the slot 9a and urge said pivot pin in a direction towards the outer face of the blade ll and thereby tension the blades II and l2 together.
Obviously, by adjusting the screw 8, the tension on the pivot pin 8 may be varied thereby varying the tension between the blades. By thus maintaining the pin 9 under a desired amount of pressure the shears will out equally as well at the point as at the heel and the article being cut will not slip from between the blades during the cutting operation. It will be apparent that the blades will always be maintained in contactual relation, my invention serving to compensate for wear thereon caused by use.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that, by arranging the spring 1 within the slot l0 the adjusting screw within the opening llb, all protruding parts are eliminated thus preventing any parts engaging with the work being cut.
I claim:
In a shear construction, a pair of blades, one of said blades fashioned with pivot pin and adjusting screw openings respectively and with an elongated longitudinally extending channel equipped with a bottom wall and effecting communication between said openings, a pivot pin extending through said pivot pin opening and. fashioned with a slot in the peripheral face thereof, an adjusting screw within said adjusting screw opening, and a leaf spring entirely within said channel and fashioned with an offset section engaging said bottom wall, said spring having a pair of ends extending within said slot of said pivot pin and underlying and engaging said adjusting screw respectively whereby the tension exerted by said adjusting screw on said spring serves to maintain said blades in tensioned condition relative to each other, said pivot pin, said adjusting screw and said spring so constructed and arranged within said openings and said channel to preclude any parts of said pin, screw and spring from extending beyond the outer face of said blade.
