Application Maren s, 193s, senal'No. 194,558
- In Austria July 14,1937 I '3 claims. (ci. 1o-'39) In the art of advertising it is known that an advertisement which is constantly movinghas a far greater. power of attracting attentionthan one whichv is stationary. Also that an advertisement which moves only intermittently is even more likely to attract attention than one which is constantly moving. Now, if this advantageous characteristic of the intermittently moved advertisement is combined with the attraction which is exerted upon the spectator by -means of a peculiar method of producingl the intermittent movement, so thathe waits for the moment when the movement is initiated in order to see how it is caused, the eiect of the advertisement is conlit siderably enhanced.
The present invention provides in a novel way such an advertisement and its principal characteristic consists in that the rotatable advertising text or picture carrying member or carrier of an advertising device, which is preferablyto beplacedin a show Window, is inluencedby an outside source of power for example heat, light, pressure or .the like which causes it to move from its stationary position into an unstable position m so as to tilt the rotatable advertisement carrier and thus to attract the undivided attention of the spectator to theadvertisement.
For thus purpose the advertising text or picture carrier is according to the invention preferably my formed of a closed system of containers advantageously made of glass ,and connected `to one another by means of connecting tubes and suit'- ably mounted so as to be able to rotate around a horizontal axis passing throughA the vcentre of 35 gravity.- Said fsystem. preferably contains a vvolatile liquid which boils at low temperature and is placed under a reduced pressure, while a source of heat is placed under the system of containers in order to bring the condensed vapors up ,m into the less heated upper vessel of the sys/tem, i
so that an unstable condition is caused in the system by locating the mass center of said sysf tem above the pivotal aids thereof under the action oi the boiling and thereby cause the system to rotate or capsize about its pivotal airis. In the accompanying drawing a few embodiments of advertising devices according to the invention are shown by way of example.
Figures l and 2 show respectively a front and` ,im side view of one embodiment.
Figures 3 and 4 a further embodiment also in front and side View. 1 I f Figures 5 and 6 are similar views of a third embodiment `of the advertising device.l w Accordingto 'the embodiment shown inFigmeans of the clips-e..
ures `1V and 2, the cylindricaljgl'asscontainers'a and-bwhich are arranged parallel to one another and connected by the tubes c, form a closed system of'containers, in which al liquid which Yboils at lowtemperature vand pressure .is placed 5 under reduced pressure. This closed system of containers at the lsame time forms theframe- Work for the advertising text or picture carrier which is placed directly or indirectly on a plate d which is attached to the connecting tubes c by l0 Thesev'clips are v vprovided With pivots f'upon which the vwhole system of ycontainersI is rotatably mounted on the two uprights h. which are attachedtofthe base g'of theV frame.`r A cylindrical housing z' is attached to 15 the base g and enclo-ses-a: source o-f light, for example an electric light bulb k.
' When the advertising device is to be setin motion, the highly volatile liquid having taken up theposition in the cylindrical vessel b as indicated in Figures 1 and 2 the current for the electric bulb lc is`switched on. The heat radiated bythe bulb k passes througha funnel-shaped member Z` mounted over an openingv in the housing i and thus reach thevessel b, thereby vaporizingr the liquid contained therein under a suitable, reduced pressure. The "vapours condense in the less heated upper vessel a whereby the former stable condition of the systemof containers is brought into an unstable condition, ywhich in 3i) turn causes the system to capsize. This imparts an oscillating motion to the system of' containers during which the advertising text or picture is illuminated yfrom below by the electric bulb. The
system then comes to rest, and in this position 3o it is the vessel a which receives the greater heat so that the above mentionedmovement is repeated andso on. For the purpose of heating the suns rays can also be used by training them onto the, at the time of lenses.`
The embodiment shown in Figures 3 and a diners from that described above only in so far vas instead of the two cylindrical vessels-k a and b,
being, lower vessel .by means 40 I.
tothe connecting tube s always presents the same face to the spectators and intermittently carries out a half turn in its own plane.
The physical or dynamical phenomenon of which use is made in the above described embodiments, i. e., that a highly volatile liquid is placed in a partial or complete vacuum in the lower container of a closed and rotatably mounted system of containers and is vaporized by means of heat so that the vapours rise into the upper containerl and are there condensed so as to bring the originally stable system of containers into an unstable condition whereby 'it'is caused to Vcapsize, makes avery favourable impression upon the spectators from the point of lview of the effect-of the advertising.
The intermittent movement of the rotatable advertising text or picture carrying. member hereinbefore mentioned can also be effected by means of a mechanical displacement of the centre of gravity, for example by arranging movable masses upon the said carrying member, the distance of the said masses from the axis of rotation being made Variable under the influence of heat. A
further possibility of producing the intermittent rotational movement of the advertising text or` picture carrying member is afforded by the influence of the light itself, for example by making use of the properties of selenium.
The design and material used for the advertising device can be varied inmany ways within the scope of the invention.- The' same remark apl plies to the text and picture placed upon the carrying member, was well .as to the illumination of the said text or picture.Y p
vHaving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner' theV same isv to be periormed,'1 vde- .clare that what I .claim is:
1. An advertising device comprising a text or picture carrier capable of being partly rotated or tilted step by step at spaced intervals of time, means supporting said carrier including a closed frame-like vessel structure disposed in a single general plane and mounted on'pivot means 1ocated in said plane having a practically horizontal axis passing through the center of gravity of the vessel structure. said frame-like vessel structure consisting of a plurality of containers interconnected by pipe means and there being a source of heat beneath said structure, and aquantity of volatile liquid under low pressure located within said vessel structure, so that the liquid in'lthe container of the Vessel structure temporarily disposed below the axis of rotation will become heated and conducted to the higher container above said axis until the latter becomes unbalanced and by superior weight from accumulated liquid causes the vessel structure and associated text or picture carrier'to periodically turn over on the axis 180 and thus show alternately the opposite sides of said carrier in turn.
2. Advertising device according to claim l,
whereinvthe containers of the vessel structure consist of hollow glass spheres and the interconnecting pipe means comprises one or more glass tubes.
3.- Advertising device according to claim 1,
wherein the frame-like vessel; structure including the containers and interconnecting pipe means comprises a closed circuit in which two spaced pipes connect the containers so that the ensemble formsa' frame bounding an-open area adapted to be occupied by -the text pr picture carrier; l
