Description

Sept. 20, 1932. w. A. ADAMS DISPLAY DEVICE Filed Aug. 13, 1931 INVENTOR- Edam ATTORNEY- Patented Sept. 20, 1932 UNITED STATES 7 WILLIAM A. ADAMS, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK A DIsrLAYjDnvroE a Application filed August 13,,ie1. Serial $56,782:
the shade, it is intended by me that, due to a certain angular configuration of said shade, the effect to the observer will be that the fish are rising and falling in their travel movements and also that the outlines of their forms vary in an'amusing manner.
Similar effects are obtainable when the objects pictorially represented on the transparency are hounds chasing a quarry, huntsmen, ocean waves, or other objects capable of motion.
In obtaining this new motion effect for a projected pictorial representation I employ a shade that is composed of a suitable translucent material, such for example as ground or frosted glass, making said shade polyg onal in cross-section, with its sides concavoconvex, and having its points of intersection rounded or blunt, said shade having in crosssection or plan view generally the appearance of a star whose points are rounded off.
As the transparent cylinder, which may be of cellophane or other suitable-material, rotates Within this angled shade, the figures projected from the cylinder on the interior of said shade appear to the observer to be enlarged as they pass the rounded points of intersection, and attenuated as they pass the concavo-convex sides, thereby also providing the further effect of rising and falling as these figures pass in review.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of a device embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof, taken on the line 22 ofFig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the trans- Fig. .3 is a plan of the base or support, and
parent cylinder, the surface thereof bearing the imprint of figures, for projection.
"In 'saidviews let 1 indicate a base or stand,
'whichis providedw'ith a central orifice 2 that is adapted to receive the mount 3 for an'upwardlyext'ending electric light bulb 4;
l Ahollow', transparent cylinder 5 surrounds the-bulb land is provided with atop 6, having a'seri'es of vanes 7 cut therein, said top also having acentral bearing 8 iniits under surface. for support upon, the rounded. end ofan'angled rodl'9 that is'h'ere shown'as engaged, at its "lower end; with the mount3.
It is intended that heat waves from the bulb 4., coacting with the vanes 7, will serve V to rotate the cylinder 5.
The base 1 is providedin its upper surface 1 with an angular groove or recess 10 which extends in somewhat the configuration of a star,
and a vertical shade 11, composed of trans lucent material, and whose cross-sectional contour corresponds with the contour of groove 10, is adapted to be seated in said groove, whereby said shade will surround the cylinder 5.
As has been premised the polygonal sides of the shade 1 1, here indicated at 12, are of concavo-convex contour in crosssection, and at their points of intersection, blunt or rounded connecting formations 13 are provided.
It is by means of these particular contours 12, 13 in the polygonal shade that the figures 14 on the rotating cylinder 5, here represented for example as fish, and projected by the light from the bulb upon the shade, appearto the observer as constantly varying in their shapes, and as rising and falling in their travel motion.
The cable connection to the lamp is indicated at 15, and may be provided with a switch 16 located in a hole 17 provided thereforin the base.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim: V
1. The combination with a lamp of a transparent, hollow cylinder surrounding said lamp, said cylinder being rotatably supported V i l,878,750
and bearing'pictorial representations, means carried by said cylinder responsive to heat waves from the lamp for rotating said cylinder, and a translucent shade outside said cylinder to expose the projected pictorial representations from the cylinder, said shade being dvi l s c ssr ec n,. npresen a P 15??? onal shape, rhaying concavo-convex sides, for the purpose of creating the effect of modified form and motion to the. representations pro jected thereon.
